what the hell happened to norton?

Sorry i dont have proof now.

But i had an archive of 7 or 8 rogues including personal security , antivirus live , internet secrity 2010 etc. I tried one of that rogues. I couldnt remember now. Sorry.

For the record I'm not doubting that it happened. It just helps to document these kinds of events so we can get Symantec to improve the product. Rogue AVs currently seem like the most common type of infection and it would be really nice if the standard AVs would be better able to block them. I often remove them from systems that have fully updated security suites from various vendors - that's pretty bad PR.

In av-comparativets overall best product of year 2009 was Norton
I known we all trust them

 

I wish I had everyones enthusiasm about Norton. I liked it but just took it off of my machine and installed Avast. It was like giving my machine a tune up it started running fast again. I'll try 2011 again when it comes out.

 

all programs seem to effect different pc's differently. I found avast to have far too much going on i did have the pro though and had the slow browsing problem some were suffering. i think 2 new versions have been released since i gave up on it though.

 

Norton/Symantec are awesome now.. With the 2009 line of products they did a rewrite, and I have been very impressed I must say. I'm more of a fan of their desktop offerings than their corporate/business solutions. They scored a 98.6% on the last av-comparatives which is impressive. It will take a lot of time for people to stop hating Norton due to the past bloat. I have had nothing but good things to say about them since 2009.

 

I switched my girlfriend and me across to Norton AV 2010 when yet another bit of scareware slipped by MSE and caused her to do something silly.

It's working great on hers and gets the job done without affecting her at all, changed from the default settings to those used with av-comparatives. However, on my machine the SONAR function keeps running false positives. I try and updated the game Distant Worlds and every patch causes it to delete the file, without any way I have found of stepping in and saying no. Likewise, I recently found it did the same think for the entropy executable from the Brood War AI Launcher.

I wouldn't mind false positives if

a) I could step in BEFORE it quarantines the file

b) There was a way to report a potential false positive as part of removing a file from quarantine.

The final straw came when I restored a file and told it not to scan that location any more (a check box on restore) yet it deleted it again the next time I ran it anyway.

I'm back on MSE, but for my other half Norton has been great.

 

Were you using the beta version of Norton Internet Security 2011?

 

What Security Suites have you found that are lighter than Norton? I think Norton is the lightest I have found, up there with Comodo.

 

not everyone's system acts the exact same way with all software, so some products are lighter on certain systems (cuz wen i used NIS2010 it wasnt that heavy, but i can def feel it wasn't as light as what i was using at the time before it) it all depends

 

I have Just tryed NIS2011 beta on my laptop and it seems to be good. light on resources and fast scanning.
I hope they get better at detecting myweb search infections which have slipped through norton 2010 on my clients computers.

 

If you believe these patches are not malcious , please , submit them to Symantec Security Response and they'll get fixed very soon.

Last time I submitted them a FP , they answered me and applied a fix though an updates just for 43 minutues after my initial submission.

And this is the problem, that needs to be built into the client not hidden away on their website, which is what I entered into the feedback box during uninstall.

 

You can send files that have been quarantined through the program but I don't know how effective that is.

I have used it once or twice but since the user gets no reply , no track number which can be used later with the Support , I don't use it nor recommend it

 

No , with all due respect ! This is not a problem .

First , all users of Norton (the majority) who are not tech savvy have the option Help&Support -> Get support which connects you to a dedicated Norton support agent for less than 5 mintues . He/She will be able to handle most of your Norton issue . For sure they would have been able to tell you how to submit them a sample .

As far as I know , Norton is the only antivirus that has built-in IM client to connect you to the support for live contact

b) I didn't have that Submit to Symantec button in my restore screen, only Restore and Remove.

 

bloat by stealth? I swear, when i installed nis2010 i could see no impact at all. I was having disconnects in LOTRO, so i ran the one click repair thingy which didn't work. I was about to try a re-install, when i removed nis my system seems to be turbo charged (as has been said here)

Interesting. In Norton Internet Security 2011, Symantec has added “real time proactive Performance Alerts” to help users more easily understand what process may be reducing responsiveness.

 

My experience with Norton continues to be a bad one.

Several months back I had to do a fresh install of Windows 7 for someone after there hard drive crashed. They had purchased Norton 360, so I downloaded and installed it for AV protection. Upon restarting the startup time was noticeably longer and in general the computer was running noticeably more slower than before installing Norton 360. This evidence most when I was installing a large application from a self extracting RAR file - it was taking a very long time indeed to extract every single file. When I disabled Norton's real time protection the extraction speed was many times faster - easily much more than 10 times faster!

Off the top of my head I'm not sure of the exact specs of the laptop, but it a reasonably high end one - a Toshiba with an 18" screen, 4 gigs of ram, and dual hard drives and also fairly new. Since this was a complete new install of Windows there was no other security software or traces of security software making Norton run slowly...

Consequently I uninstalled Norton and replaced it with the free version of Avast 5 which had very little impact on the computer's performance.
