I run an anti-virus and basic Firewall (no HIPS).

Because I don't have HIPS, should I be worried about things being able to bypass the firewall? I found classical HIPS to be a burden to run and I only install stuff on my comp that I'm sure is safe.

To help protect my comp, is there a free Trojan Scanner that I can download to my computer and run on-demand. Not a behavior based one, but one that just searches for known worms/trojans that are on the harddrive?

You likely won't be needing anything big, as you appear to be safe surfer :)

To complement AV and firewall I'd suggest SuperAntiSpyware. Its free version should suffice. It offers manual updating and fully-functional scanning/removal on-demand.

MalwareBytes AntiMalware and Hitman Pro both come very highly recommended.
Most of the cleanup support forums I've seen use MalwareBytes in their toolbox. :thumb:

The Malwarebytes Anti-malware detects things like Trojans and Worms, right? It's not just a spyware detector like Adaware, right?

MBAM simply refers to the whole bunch as malicious processes, and as a back up on-demand scanner to support your AV, it's at the top of the heap, in my opinion. You can add the Pro or paid version for real-time protection, but you've indicated you want only free on-demand scanner. Go with MBAM or Hitman Pro, you'll be in good shape.

MBAM detects spyware, adware and some malware.

    Try one of these two:

    A-Squared Anti-Malware Free

    Hitman Pro

Both of these are very powerful on-demand scanners!

I can recommend MBAM, SAS, and A-Squared Antimalware (now known as Emsisoft Antimalware).

MBAM is my favorite of the 3. SAS has a lower detection rate than MBAM IMHO and A-Squared has very large database updates, more false positives, and is a little heavy on the resources.

If you can live with the FP's and the resource A-Squared should have the superior detection rate since it has the A2 and the Ikarus engines.

If you want really light you can go with A-Squared's command line scanner which is basically the same thing as A-Squared Antimalware, but run from the cmd prompt:

Its detection rate is dismal compared to MBAM and SAS. The only thing that is worth anything is its Immunize Function and that can be replaced with Spyware Blaster.

Wow, I didn't know Spybot S&D was still around. Haven't used it in years so I don't know.

Yes it is very much here. :D I use it as a backup scanner. But the update frequency is disappointing. max 2 times a week.

Arbitrary numbers mean nothing, what matters is actual cleaning and removal.

Scan an infected system with it and see what it detects, take the same infected system and scan with SAS and MBAM. Guarunteed Spybot wont detect near as much as the other two even though it has more "signatures"

I have the paid (Pro) versions of SAS and MBAM, and have been curious which one overall provides the best resident real-time protection?

I've done some searching for various tests/comparison reviews but have not found any that included both SAS and MBAM.

Using avast! 5 Pro on Win XP SP3 Pro systems for AV/AS.

The real answer is "both" - SAS and MBAM each detect different threats, so having them both running offers you better protection than just running one or the other.

I am running KIS 2011 CF1 (11.0.1.400a) + WinPatrol PLUS 2010 (18.1.2010) + MBAM Pro 1.46 along with Returnil Virtual System 2010 (3.1.8774.5254). I have also tested SUPERAntiSpyware Pro 4.41.1000. It causes no conflict(s). No problem with any general software (Firefox, Office 2010, Virtual PC, Chrome, Other softwares and utilities). System runs smoothly as SAS takes very little memory and is fast.

I recommend Malwarebytes Antimalware. It can run togeter with an antivirus without conflict. According to many test, Malwarebytes have had a better result than SuperAntispyware.:)

I find it interesting that the owner of SAS would recommend the competition in his statement. o_O

It's kinda like David Oreck recommending Oreck vacuum cleaners and Hoover as well. :D

I have seen Mbam to be very useful against rogues.. But for trojans I prefer Emsisoft Kit which has the on demand scanner or Dr. web cureit. Thanks

Well how about the owner of Malwarebytes doing the same? A layered approach is always best and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware along with an antivirus and some common sense is essentially bulletproof. :)
