havnt tried either of those but i suggest online armor free(use it on my xp 32 bit computer), i think its an excellent firewall/hips to replace windows firewall. and you can also try out outpost firewall free which also has hips. i would use online armor free on my main compute but its not 64 bit compatiable yet so i just settled for outpost free

Two completely different products, you have to try them and see which one you feel more confortable with :)
This type of threads don't go very far, what you get is usually XYX is great... use it or XYZ is crap stay away from it.

Well I really do not see why. The guy did not say PC Tools firewall versus ZoneAlarm, the guy said PC Tools OR ZA. So it is not an A vs B affair. :D It is rather an A or B decision.

    Thanks.

    The tool that matches:

your unknown needs for security functionality
your unknown ability to drive a fw
    your unknown www risk profile
the tool that you find after test driving lives happily with your HW/SW set up.

As soon as a post says
tool A or tool B you are almost guaranteed an X vs Y thread. Total waste of time.

I think it will be those who will turn the thread into an A vs B thread that will make the thread a waste of time, not the thread itself. To me it should be quite informative to an extent.

    Thanks.

Zonealarm pro has some features that pctools doesn't have. Phishing tool bar, credit monitoring and advanced download protection. PCtools is very simple and powerful though. It seems to run alot lighter than zonealarm. Zonealarm's application control has alot more options on how to run it. If your looking for a simple firewall that has application control and its light, go with pctools. Zonealarm has always had a good firewall and great application control but it seems a little sluggish. The best thing that you can do is try both on your system. You never know when things are going to run on your system oddly.

Based on the Matousec tests, the choice between Zone Alarm (not Zone Alarm Pro) and PC Tools is easy. PC Tools is much better than Zone Alarm. Zone Alarm Pro is very good but that was not the question.

I realize some have problems with the matousec tests, but in all my reading on the various forums, I've ready many, many posts recommending PCT Firewall and very, very few recommending ZA (Free). I have used all the free firewalls and I now tend to like PCTools the best because its quite easy to use and effective.

Zone Alarm isnt a HIPS, PC Tools is. Thats the only reason for the difference. In terms of the FW capabilities they are pretty even. If someone else sees this mention of Matousec they are going to go off on you.

"Based on the Matousec tests...:" Matousec doesn't do firewall tests, never did.

Well he actually never wrote ZA free either. Since ZA had the ZA pro key give away I would assume that is what he is referring to. So its not really an easy choice. As I said before give each a try and see how they function. Each has its own strenghts.

My apologies, your logic makes sense. I actually attempted to get the free Zone Alarm Pro but they never sent me a key, or anything else for that matter, so I guess I messed something up. I think there are better free firewalls so I never followed up to check on the problem.

    Have a good day!

I'd try PCtools first. Take it for a spin. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Brocke, if i were at your place then i will choose PC Tools PF over ZA free or paid one. Reason is simple PC Tools is far more better than ZA, and it was also proved at many independent tests.

Of those two I prefer PC Tools. A lot of it comes down to simply how do it "feel" to you. I use Comodo w/D+ because after learning how to use it I'm now comfortable with it, and don't want to go through another learning curve with a new product.

If I were to pay for a firewall though, it would be Online Armor, no contest.

In fact Matousec test firewalls, AV's,..., but only the hips component, since PC Tools FW and ZA both have HIPS and @Broke never said that he was looking for a firewall, matousec is still valid.

    My opinion, ZA is better.
