Fixed by enabling #1, Pre-release updates.

I have followed previous instructions and reinstalled 4.2.35 (ESS) and at the time I noticed that the modules had updated also. There was no problem anymore with any cookie recognition messages or failing to log on to any site. This morning when I turned my computer on I now have a Windows Action Centre message saying that ESS is not turned on, and looking into ESS it appears that real time file protection is turned off, and I cannot get it turned back on,so was this intentional in the module update or is there something that I have to do to turn it back on??

UPdate.....did a reboot and it is now turned on- how odd!!

Just to report that the problem I reported in the OP, is STILL occurring in the latest v4.2.40. So it's back to v4.0.474.0 for me. My license is due for renewal in June so it looks like I won't be renewing beyond there.
