    Hi
sorry to bother you excellent Wilder people but try as I might, I can't spot the line(s) which are causing this hijacking to keep happening - please tell me what needs to be deleted from this log, and anything else I need to banish in safe mode from my other files. Many thanks in advance.

Reboot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406
then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

    Delete these files
    c:\documents and settings\owner\application data\system.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\wininet32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\iexplore.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\runwin32.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\rundll32.exe

    and Delete these folders

    then
    Reboot normally &

Download and unzip or install these programs/applications if you haven't already got them. If you have them, then make sure they are updated and configured as described

    Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
    AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

    Run Sybot S&D

After installing, first press Online, press search for updates, then tick the updates it finds, then press download updates. Beside the download button is a little down pointed arrow, select one of the servers listed. If it doesn't work or you get an error message then try a different server

Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, press 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

    then reboot &

    Run ADAWARE

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
the current ref file should read at least 01R298 20.04.2004 or a higher number/later date

    Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

    then......

click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

    then.........

go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries.

    reboot again

then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

i'm sending the files off for checking but they look bad all refer to porn and dodgy search engines so are causing the hijacks

the rundll32.exe you couldn't find is probably the homepage resetter

let us know if the problem is cured

    Hi

    Your guidance is supreme!

    You told me:

"run hijack this and fix these 2 entries

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
    Settings,ProxyServer = 127.0.0.1:8080
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
    Settings,ProxyOverride = local

then open IE/tools/options/connections/ click on the connection you are using and untick use a proxy server
from your dns servers it looks like you are using NTL is that correct"

As you can tell as I can now get to Wilders - I am back on the web!

I'm not with NTL though - I go through Virgin Broadband.

    Re. the missing file
    C:\documentsand settings\owner\rundll32.exe
I have found a file rundll32.exe but located in WINDOWS - should I delete it?

    Thanks again!!

No don't delete the windows rundll32 that is needed

everything else looked clear in the log you sent me so
you should be clear to go

just have a read of this https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=27971 for info on how to tighten your security settings and how to help prevent future attacks.

    and do this please

Turn off system restore by following instructions here
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039

That will purge the restore folder and clear any malware that has been put in there. Then reboot & then re-enable sytem restore & create a new restore point.

    Hello again

Here's the new log after I did all Kent suggested, although I failed to locate the
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\lhp.dll
    or the
    sp.html
I tried everything I could but the searched didn't spot these files.

I'm a bit unsure when I finish with Safe Mode and reboot - a message comes up to say that I'm still in 'selective start up' mode, and that I must change this to 'normal start up to undo the changes made' - which I do and reboot again - but am I actually reinstating the files I deleted??

'Search for....about blank' still manages to pop up on opening IE.

    Hi alanm333,

Let us try this from a different angle this time.

Download CWShredder as you will need it later.

    Reboot into safe mode.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\gbdd.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\gbdd.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\gbdd.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\gbdd.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\gbdd.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\gbdd.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E3336283-7CC1-412C-9824-71791435E659} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\gbdd.dll

Run CWShredder. Be sure ALL other windows are closed use the Fix button and follow the instructions you will receive.

There also may be hidden files. See HERE for how to show hidden files.

The following files should be gone but doublecheck to be sure, if they are not then delete them:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\gbdd.dll
sp.html <-- You may have to do a search for this file to verify it is gone.

Reboot in normal mode and then post a fresh HijackThis log.

    Regards,
    Kent

    Hi there

Did as suggested - neither of the files you asked me to look for where anywhere to be found, and after reboot, coming into my IE the home page stayed on Google so that's very encouraging!

Here's the new log - fingers crossed it may have worked this time.

Many thanks to you and all Wilders contributors - 'all stars!'

    Hi alanm333,

You have something new that looks suspicious.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [rundll32] C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MAPI\1033\nt\rundll32.exe

There also may be hidden files. See HERE for how to show hidden files.

Then reboot into safe mode and zip the following file:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MAPI\1033\nt\rundll32.exe

Do not delete the file yet.

    Reboot.

Go to Kaspersky's Online Virus Scanner and upload the zipped file for analysis.

    Post the results back here.

    Regards,
    Kent

    Hi Kent / Wilders

I'm not out of the woods yet.

I ran the fix you suggested on HJT but when looking for the rundll32 file in safe mode - it had gone - I assume that the HJT fix deleted it. Something else had appearred on the log which I thought looked suspicious - it was within a path called
    .........windows\system32\amfifaa.dll
I used the Kasperskys Online Virus Scanner which said that:
    Current object: amfifaa.dll
    amfifaa.dll Infected: Trojan.Win32.StartPage.fw
So I felt that there was a good case to delete it, which I did.

I rebooted, and immediately ran Shredder which was clean, then ran the following HJT log, but upon opening IE, again my SPYWAREGUARD told me that an attempt to change my homepage to about:blank had been made.
Can you help me any further - this is getting me down!

    Thanks

    Alan

having pulled several of these files and others that appear related apart recently
this reference appears in some of them
    NumberOneMP3
so fix this with hjt O9 - Extra button: NumberOneMP3 (HKLM)and do a search on the computer for anyfiles relating to NumberOneMP3 and let us know if you find any

to see if we can prevent the cws hijackers reinfecting you try this
a workaround seems to be install a good firewall, lists here http://www.wilders.org/firewalls.htm if you haven't already got one and block these ranges of ports, both incoming and outgoing 209.66.114.0-209.66.115.255 and 81.211.105.0-81.211.105.255
that stops the known cws servers responding or the hidden files on your computer updating. This works sometimes but not always, but it's a help. The problem with this approach is that some good sites might also be blocked
then when we have a guaranteed working cure for it we can advise how to fully remove it.

    Hi

    Did as suggested. search provides:
    4 shortcuts, 2 icons within C:\documents & settings\owner\application data
and a folder of this name , again within this path - should I delete?

I have the firewall within XP activated - do you think I should apply a better one?

    Thanks
