    Well, couple days later:

1/ the hidden object bug seems still unfixed (total lack of testing, it manifests itself on every computer I tried)
2/ the new roll-up message nonsense followed by system scan you have to look at until finished to actually allow you to choose an action on free is really another WTH... horrible design. (Beyond that, actually never got that far due to #1)

    Sigh. :thumbd:

927, you are right, but is there any possibility to have the chance to decide what to do with the file? Is "deny access" enough? Do I have to do anything else?

no you cant do anything else (and you dont have to). all the options like ignore, delete are gone in v10.

if you test v10 with real malware same thing happens (at least in the free version). if the scanner finds malware you get an option

So if malware is detected by guard I would never know about it if I don't check the reports or events, am I right?

I found this in help file:
    Where is this notification window?

Can someone confirm whether I've got the correct settings for the free version of avira 10.

Scanner - scan all files, checked everything on the additional settings except "ignore offline files", in the archive section, everything is checked except "limit recursion depth", high heuristics

Guard - no archive, high heuristic, smart extensions

I switched off Avira to download this file. And as you said I tried to unpack the file. in this case the notification rolls-up.
Without switching off i couldn't download the file because it is detected by Avira but WITHOUT any notification. The same situation is when I test it with eicar.com (press the link), yes it is detected by Avira (log in events) but WITHOUT any notification. Something is really weird.

if i check scan archives i get a roll up at the same time as click on the link (zip file). the "problem" is that the roll-up is not on top (on my pc)

What do you mean by that? I marked scan archives a long time ago.

Well, there's no action choice, as I noted above, there's horrible "fast" system scan and only then it lets you actually do something. Well, not for me, b/c the system scan finds a bogus hidden object and suggests to use rescue CD, then you can either abort the scan or ignore it. If you abort the scan, it fires up again in a couple of seconds and yet another round of this stupidity begins.

    (Avira security suite)

I've noticed that an on-demand scan detects over 200,000 objects !

At first I thought I might be infected, but I restored an image and it still detects over 200,000 objects !

What's up with that ? I don't think I even have that may files !

Trjam, if GData is a keeper for you it is fine with me, I will never even test it as I 'm not interested in double engine systems, as a matter of fact I have reverted to using Avira on demand as I find any active guard too heavy and useless anyway.

Just a little note about this thread: I have made the mistake again to participate to a discussion about a new release wishing to give my first impressions, obviously this always ends up in an unpleasant way.

Wow, this starts to be even worse... Now I received a "wonderful" advertising popup despite I have explicitely forbidden the *censored* avnotify.exe from running via SRP. So, it seems they've switched their absolutely obnoxious bombarding of users with adverts which insult intelligence of people with IQ even slightly above freeze point of water to somewhere else?! How about that they start focusing on fixing serious issues instead?

Well, getting fed up. Giving this time till the end of the month and unless the stuff such as non-working updater facility, the bogus hidden objects detection plus the horrible quick system scan before allowing people to do something about detected stuff are fixed, it's gonna be bye bye Avira after many years.
    :'( :thumbd:

Edit: Wheee, and they detect the ~Link removed~ which serves the only purpose - to kill the splash/popup - as Trojan now. Way to go

Please read the Avira Eula licensing agreement. The software is provided on their terms for your personal use.

Yeah, I have read the EULA. My computer runs whatever I allow it to run. I do not "change, translate, reverse compile, decompile or disassamble", nor do I "reproduce, translate, change or create works derived" and I do not "remove copyright endorsements, serial numbers or other features which serve to identify the software". Denying the avnotify nag from running is perfectly legal, compliant with their EULA and whoever from Avira thinks something else is free to try their luck in court. There's not a single word about users letting Avira annoy them with stupid adverts being a mandatory condition to use the SW.

If they wish to prevent people from denying their advertising carpet bombing, they can either change their EULA to explicitely disallow users to prevent avnotify.exe from running, or find a saner advertising model for their business.

Noone forces you to use Avira !

Obviously that popup is there for a reason. To encourage people to pay for the product. How bad is that ? Most AV vendors don't even offer a free version.

You see - this is particularly funny. There are loooong threads here about toolbars bundled and how they are bad. With that SW, there are extensive EULAs which in detail state lots of legalize about advertising being part of the SW. Soooo... here's the latest Avira Free EULA attached - there's not a single word about advertising being part of their SW.

So, what goes here? Avira is good guys, so they are allowed to, the bundled toolbar guys are baaaad mkay, hence unethical and not allowed? This is a matter of principle.

And yeah, most vendors may not offer a free version, there are quite a few who do though. And none of them resorts to such ridiculous advertising bombs like Avira.

    There is no comparison.

The Avira popups 'advertise' Avira, right ?
They don't collect and send information like the toolbars.

But I figure you have made up your mind, so there is no point in discussing this any further.

Hmmm yeah... there's indeed no meaningful comparison. The toolbars
1/ collect and send information (if you so wish) required to perform their functionality, that is usually to search the web (and provide some personalized experience thereof) to provide some security-related fuctionality (those security linkscanners/sitescanners come to mind here) etc.
2/ their existence is advertised during install and covered by legal conditions in EULA
3/ they are either opt-in or at least opt-out

Failing all the above, I imagine the general opinion of vast majority of people here and elsewhere would be that such behaviour is totally unacceptable.

    OTOH - the avnotify.exe
1/ serves absolutely no useful purpose whatsoever beyond nagging users with fullscreen ads (which has been proved by thousands and thousands of users, for whom disabling this PE does not affect the functionality of the product in any way)

2/ install is completely hidden, no mention of that in EULA or anywhere on install screens
3/ There's no opt-out at all, let alone an opt-in
4/ When people discover this and start asking how to disable, the vendor starts to screem "don't violate our EULA" - meh, the EULA is totally silent about this SW being a rather intrusive form of adware

Well, that's plain unacceptable and extremely counterproductive to say at least. I've had people for whom I installed Avira on their PCs getting seriously upset about this repeatedly, some even wondered that got infected by some fraudulent fake AV when they saw this popup for the first time. Yet the vendor repeatedly ignores mass complaints about the annoying advertising popups, tries to hide behind (nonexistent) legalize and worse yet, it now scared users who try to use a tool to disable this that they are infected by a Trojan.
