I have 2 computers, one is older desktop that needs a light resource touch. Another is a lappy, that is fairly up to snuff, both running Windows XP Home.

Ive been trying to learn all the different terminology and types of protection. But its a bit overwhelming. I also have a User2 that is much more less tech savvy than I using the computers, (not calling myself a computer genius). They primarily use the Older Desktop with 2 GHz Celeron 2gb RAM, and I am testintg and trying out things ont the Fast Lappy, and will probably have 2 different setups at the end of the testing and learning (and teaching User2).

    So far I have this...

    Everything is latest release.

    Desktop

    XP Home SP3
    Admin Rights

    Linksys Hub Hardware Firewall

    Windows Firewall On

    Avira 10 Free
    SuperAntiSpyware
WinPatrol Free - which makes User2 jumpy and agitated.
    KeyScrambler Free
    Secunia PSI
    Hostman with MVPS Hosts list

Macrium Reflect - Just learning to use this.

IE8 which is basically not used, except for extremely stupid sites.

Firefox 3.6 (AdBlock Plus, BetterPrivacy, Certificate Patrol, CS Lite, FlashBlock, Ghostery, KeyScrambler, TamperData, TACO, TrackMeNot, WorldIP, WOT) Trying out NoScript but it seems a bit busy and labour intensive, I might be able to live with it but User2 will definitely not. Will be teaching other user some of this stuff. Looking into RoboForm, Last Pass, and Weave & XMarks as well. Need more research.

Opera 10 used as frequently as Firefox.

Chrome which I havent messed with much yet, but will be getting use.

    Seamonkey ditto Chrome.

    Lappy

    XP Home SP3
    Admin Rights

    Linksys Hub Hardware Firewall

    Windows Firewall On

Fresh install of OS on new HD.
    Avast 5 Free
    SuperAnti Spyware
    WinPatrol Free
    KeyScrambler Free
    Secunia PSI
    SuMo
Hostman with HPHosts and MVPS lists.

    Ditto Browsers

    On Demand:

    A Squared Free
    Malware Bytes Anti Malware

interesting looks like all our popular vendors are moving forward with 64bit now.

    sandboxie now has 64 bit
xiaolin is phasing out MD with a new MD under a different name which I presume will be 64bit.
Online Armor is in 64 bit beta.

I wonder what is going to happen with IIlya and his Defense Wall?

you are correct but they finally got my stuff straighten out. I have just now gone back, For a user with multiple computers their prices and protection are worth it.

Some vendors are going to find it hard to survive with their ridiculous high prices and limited number of computers allowed.

you have to allow for untrusted prevx in the firewall so prevx doesnt have problem connecting to the internet when scaning;)

On my real system (WinXP home SP3)

    avast 5 free

Sandboxie paid (secured settings) for browsing, games, and quick testing (each their own sandbox)

Zonealarm free, 80289 didn't like the 9 version

    WinPatrol a nice watchdog

On demand: Mbam free, SAS free, Hitman, Avira.

and for for testing, banking and stuff I use several virtual PC configurations

VPC Banking: DW, Prevx free, Avira free on demand and IE8 with undo option on.... a little paranoid, I know ...

Testing: several VPC,s with different security setups

for instance: I don't like NetFramework and java on my real PC, so I put those buggers on a VPC or in a Sandbox.

    Cheers.
