Rising AV 2010 free question

what do people who use this AV think of it? i mean as far as detection, etc. is it a keeper?

 

I've been playing with it on one of my machines and it seem decent, think it's better on Chinese based malware than perhaps Russian based. Under computer protection set the file monitor to high though, from stuff I've read and seen the default setting is weak. Seem light on the system and is one of the few works well with a limited account.

 

As long as you have the Proactive defense and the cloud technology turned on it is very good at blocking threats.

Rising has vulnerabilities in its driver.

You can read about them under advisories at ntinternalsdotorg (NTIADV1001 pending)

 

Most people who use Rising on here use it for it's Smart Active Defense which is a lite HIPS. Its detection rates are ok but it's not number one in detection.

 

it's the most complete (features wise) "free" anti-malware softwares around.

every other free ones has something missing.

i think i'll keep it.

 

Sorry, for free AV's, I would say Avast is better.

 

Agree... I would use avast! over RISING anyday - at least if this is all they can come up with for 2010.

Sorry,...disagree. HIPS+AV+CLOUD (RisingAV), for me is better than Avast setup.

Ok the detection can be worst, but its HIPS is effective & friendly, covering something that Avast doesn't covers, plus CLOUD...

Are only my own preferences after both tested in my computer.

 

I also agree it is one of the most effective and easy to use HIPS

- OS renforcement : set to high
- Application reenforcement: enter internet facing aps as browsers
- Application monitoring: powerfull MD like registry and file protection. It takes knowledge but it can be used to encapsulate internet facing software (making sure they only touch what is theirs)

When you could download presets for application reenforcement and monitoring this very powerfull means would benefit more x32 users

 

Apparently the HIPS only works in 32-bit, so not an option for just about anyone who buys a new system these days...or for me.

 

True, but with UAC, icacls and "zones\3\1806" registry tweak, you have got intrusion prevention (icacls preventing elevation, registry tweak preventing download/exection) and intrusion (UAC) system from the OS. Adding Trusteer Rapport to prevent side by side intrusion of your browser and Google for additional policy sandbox and you tackeld 90% of the problems IMO

Pretty easy to determine by looking at the performance of my system with it installed, the way it acted when I tested new malware against it. Things like that doesn't just slip by. In comparison to avast! it doesn't handle most new malware as well. It catches a part and the rest runs free ruining the system. I don't care which product is most bloated with features - I care about what works and protects me best and I personally thought that was what all thought is most important.

 

True, the AV part is mediocre, but its system reinforcements is very nice specially if all set to high. A malware can only reside in memory and do nothing, after restart it's just an inactive malware. Now if Avast let something get through it's game over.

 

It would be really good if Rising could make its HIPS a standalone program, the AV is really bloated and with the recent updates I get BSOD.

You don't think I tested that? I was of course referring to the highest settings when testing it.

 

The bradesco malware is a phishing attempt. "I don't know what that is... whatever" hardly fills me with confidence as to the testing methodology.

No if you ask me - and that's from personal testing comparing to the other solutions.
