I tried it on my 64 bit PC. The Premium version. The webguard and the mailguard refused to start.

You don't have to be sorry. It is the final version on Softpedia. Hare is a quote from Avira forum:
    Hi,
Avira 10 final is now available on our website. You can download the Premium version from here or the Premium Security Suite from here.

Later edit: Softpedia is considered a download partner, so the setup files from their website should be the latest ones.

Softpedia's version 10, which they posted yesterday, is the same version as the official final version that is now posted on Avira's download site.

The RC version became the final version.

Having issues with a clean shutdown on Windows 7, i.e. a momentary 'This program is preventing Windows from shutting down' appears every time. Although this alert disappears immediately, but is still annoying.

ProActiv part seems rather useless so far. Tried throwing some stuff at it and it didn't cought anything. On WinXP 32bit that is.

Under Threat Categories, there is a new addition - 'Programs that violate the private domain'. Is this supposed to be the compensation for removal of anti-phishing?

Interface had a slight facelift which reminds me of Symantec. Updater is still the same looking (rather ugly), and it still has 1 update per day (wtf, it's 2010, not 1986), still a retarded ad popup. Malware detection popup could be better because it's just plain confusing and looks kinda crappy compared to main interface. And what's up with that "scanning" popup on malware detection. It's annoying like hell. One would expect more than all this for a new version number. Or i'm just used to ALWIL policy of doing a thorough refresh of the program and are not bound to yearly releases or churning out major version numbers for every slightly bigger update.

it is lighter than v9 and the scan is really fast. i like it so far. My free avira did not update today till i manually updated it. I did manually update after 5 minutes starting the laptop. it might be nothing though. just a delay

yeah i agree ALWIL does really nice things on testing allowing users to beta test update etc. it seems like avira dont listen to users. ie: updates suck and people complain nothing gets done.

all im really seeing in this version is a GUI update. nothing yet.

Avast 5 was a great update new GUI more security etc. i wish they would learn from different companys like that.

I think they have done a very good job. If you want glitz in a GUI get Kaspersky. To me it is how well it works and it looks like the have loaded up on some great enhancements. To each his own.

No. Just install over the previous version and choose to "update" when the options comes up.

It's also faster on my netbook XP Pro SP3, so far that was my main concern as a behavioural blocker could have slowed things down.

This is not a new category : in AV9, it was called Security Privacy Risk (SPR).
AntiPhishing was not took out : look in Configuration | General | Threat Categories | Phishing. [detection are PHISH/...]
But, phishing URLs blocking is only provided by WebGuard so it's only for Premium versions like in AV9.

Either you do like shadek said, or you wait tomorrow for the upgrade slide-up : all the files will be automatically downloaded by Updater and then installed.

There is nothing new here :
    - AHeaD (Advanced Heuristic Analysis and Detection) is the name of Avira heuristic.
    - AntiPhishing is present in AV10 Personal too (Look in Configuration | General | Threat Categories | Phishing [detection are PHISH/...]) like it was in AV9. But, phishing URLs blocking is only provided by WebGuard so it's only for Premium versions like in AV9.
    So nothing was took out.

That is what I did as I saw update job was missing. That was when I thought the softpedia version was the Final, I thought it was strange that softpedia had the final and not the Avira website. I am off now to download the final from the Avira website.

So what was uploaded at SoftPedia was like a RC? Do I just need to run an update manually with Avira free version tomorrow and I'm fine?
