LOL. Overall a very positive review. Too bad they didn't look at the Premium version so we would have their thoughts about the firewall.

So , with the following quotes ; "VIPRE detected 94 percent of the threats but didn't fully remove the traces of all those it found. In particular, it left behind executable files for a quarter of the samples and left one of them actually running—that's not good!" how do they get 4 out of 5 stars ? Lol . This is what it is . An antivirus program that caught 94 % of the samples but , left exe files in 25 % of them AFTER cleaning ? Based on their own review , PCMAG writers are not too bright . As far as how good it really is , I will wait for better tests than PCMAG's .:thumbd: :thumbd: :thumbd: :cautious:

AlexDBR has a good video on the web detection aspect of it I believe in his AV Video testing thread.

well a good review as always.....................but i really don't understand the concept of not including signatures....

comodo is another vendor which comes to my mind who follows this stupid practise, for comodo u need to download 89mb...

i mean consumer has to download the file anyway, then why not with installer?

The scoring system that Neil Rubenking uses is pretty complex - sometimes he explains in detail how he comes to the final scores, but he didn't in this particular review. I can assure you though that he's very consistent and subjects all products to the same process. Of course that doesn't mean you have to agree with his conclusions, but you're choosing to quote only a part of the review. By the way, he is very responsive to email if you have questions. Why not ask him to explain himself? :D

I know Neil . Is he thorough ? Yep . That is the only thing we will agree on . True , I used but two quotes . However ; those quotes are all about what an antivirus software should do . Shall we give Vipre 60 points out of 100 because it actually starts and runs ? To give 4 out of 5 stars for an antivirus that found 94 percent of the samples and yet , could only remove ( or clean ) 75 percent , is borderline preposterous ! 94 % is good . NOT very good and not excellent . In today's market , it is good . 75 % cleaning ( or removing ) IMHO is poor , bordering on satisfactory . It makes no difference what the author is examining outside of detection and removal . Period ! Because this is what it is for . Because install was smooth and GUI is easy to navigate does not , in any normal person's mind , negate the cleaning and detection rates . You can read the article as a whole and care about whether the tray icon is good or bad . Or anything else . The bottom line though , is whatever tests he ran do not show this antivirus is a 4 star software . He is giving wayyyy too much value to things that are far less important . I think people need to look closely at what was written instead of , " 4 stars " !!! They see 4 stars and want it . If PCMAG was a good source ( which it is not ) and these were the only tests available , I would not put it on my machine . Why ? Because no matter how well it installed or how nice the GUI is , the detection rates are decent and removal capability is poor . You cannot argue his own findings . It is all about where you put the most value in this kind of software . Obviously , detection and cleaning carry little weight in his review . I take their ( PC mag ) reviews VERY lightly . Cool to read but never good enough to trust . But , that goes for most magazines out there that do reviews like this .

Why, MSE fall from grace? Gets raving reviews in all tests, it's exactly a great reference, supposed to be the ultimate Freebie.

    Stay on topic.

I have a license although not using it anymore. I really do like the gui, its low impact on the system (not noticable), even the updates r more regular then say a year ago but theres 1 thing that stopped me from using it: After every scan i have to defrag my system. No good for a gamer like me :'(

can't really say i've found any reason to defrag after scans...i have perfect disk scheduled to run the day after my scheduled vipre scan and i haven't ever seen it indicating more fragmented files than it would have otherwise...

I could use COMODO or avast! as better reference. The actual reviews for MSE are already old, from the time where MSE was good. You gotta learn that times change, and especially since malware could change every hour. Only those responsive to change survive, and MSE hasn't shown to be one of them.

you ever hit up their support folks or forum about it? that's a weird issue to be having with fragmentation.

    is your disk nearly full?

Yet another awesome review for MSE. I'm trying to learn your ways Mr. Raven but I keep seeing these reviews :D

Regardless, Vipre is a great AV and the lightest I've yet had, very very happy with it.

Okay, if you weren't sarcastic I'll certainly respect your opinion. If you were sarcastic, don't even ask.

EDIT: What I see on the link provided is that MSE didn't get Advanced+ on the latest testing results and my two cents for the proactive protection is that they've slowed down their pace. I did like MSE very much when I felt it was doing its job against new malware just fine - now it's not, as you can see from your own personal testing which started this whole chain as well.
