I just updated ESET Smart Sec. to 4.2 from 4.0 and it had a problem closing some Windows Explorer files. (Windows Vista 32-bit) Ever since, it fails to read firewall configuration.

I have tried uninstalling (per ESET instructions) and re-installing, but the problem persists.
I even found and deleted ESET folders in AppData Local and Roaming and then ran a registry clean, but the problem is still the same.

Any thoughts on what to do. I've used ESET for years and would hate to have to use a different solution...

had a similar problem today on a clean Vista install, eset kept giving me the same firewall error, I called support and they worked around it by switching off "enable self Defense"

Open advaced set up, remove tick from "enable self defence" and then reboot machine. Everything seemed to work after that.
It would seem that some Vista machines dont like the self defence feature.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks, that worked for me as well!!

Will having checked that box make me less secure? Wonder what I'm missing by unchecking self-defence...

    Hello,

Please install the latest service pack for Microsoft Windows Vista and you should no longer see this message.

    Regards,

4.2.35 is giving me the same error on Windows 7 when starting Windows. And also when I make changes to firewall rules. Any fix for this?

I also had the problem over the weekend. I have a clean install of Windows 7 *64, all Microsoft updates applied.
I installed the *64 version of Eset Smart Security and got the same message.
The message also persisted after a restart.

I reverted my system to a image taken prior to installing Eset, and installed Norton Internet Security 2010 which did not have any issues.

Hopefully Eset will fix their issue soon so that all users can use their product :)

Could you please post here the information about installed modules (Help -> About)? Both EAV and ESS are tested on all Windows systems thoroughly (including Windows 7 x64) before release and we didn't find any problems. Just out of curiosity, does disabling self-defence and restarting the computer make a difference?
