I have been using Online Armor for bit over 2 yrs not and have liked them, but recently I upgraded my OS to Win 7 64bit and was quite dissapointed to see OA not having a 64bit FW product, yet again 64bit OS's have been out for over 3 yrs now, so why hadn't OA bring out a 64 bit version of their firewall.

So while waiting in the mean time, I am looking for a good 64bit Firewall, any reccomendations.

I tried Outpost Firewall Pro 64bit and it works without any problems. You can try.

    My W7 X64 woes:

    1) Outpost Pro: Works great, good speed and a great application. Love the interface and featuers. Problem: outlook slow as hell, SonicWALL SSL VPN doesn't work - can't even install the thing.

    2) Comodo v. 4: Again great product and rich with features. I just needed the firewall to work as I've got Vipre AV. Problem: it doesn't autostart at startup.

You can try PC Tools Firewall Plus. It works well with 64bit OS.

Reeds - PC Tools Firewall is the best one yet, no bugs really. I liked Outposts interface better and the ability to see detailed traffic and so forth but PC Tools simplicity and smooth running is a winner.

You may want to consider Win 7's built-in two-way fw. You have to use your noggin a bit more to get it set up properly for two-way control of the different programs and services such as BITS, DNS and DHCP, to the various required ports for TCP and UDP, as well as ICMP, and especially if you set it up for Public as active with default blocking inbound/outbound. Lots of your time will be required as well. There's no "hand holding" here for the most part, although there are lots of default rules to give you some good ideas so you're not competely on your own. Once you've got everything set, you just export the profile so it's there for you to import at will if necessary in the future. The fw is already built in to the O/S so no 3rd party impact to drag things down or introduce problems. It works great and I completely swear by it :)

Stem created a great tutorial on the two-way firewall here

    hi Wat.

Yeah the built in FW in W7 is more then OK but the inability to to display connections other then using netstat -a to me makes me want to use anther firewall. I want to see what apps are connecting where and how much juice their sucking etc. However if it wasn't for that I would simply stick to the built in FW.

    Thanks for the link.

You said you liked OA's Firewall. The 64bit version is currently in beta. You could always try that if you like or wait for the official product to be released. And try some programs out why you wait. =)

If the money are not a problem you can test Look 'n' Stop firewall, very light and powerful simple personal firewall.

    You're welcome.

The Win 7 fw displays very little informational-wise, so that can be frustrating, although you can set it to log both blocked and allowed connections. As for wanting to know what connects to where, it's straightforward; As long as it's set as per the screenshot, nothing is allowed in/out by default. The only applications allowed to connect anywhere, are those you've set "Allowed" rules for. They will also be restricted by the protocol(s), port(s) and direction(s) you've set the rules for. You could also restrict by ip address. So if an unknown process attempts to connect out, it can't because no rules are set for it.

Example is the Firefox rule: you can see I've restricted it to protocol TCP, and the specific ports for outbound direction. It can not connect to any other ports.

    Hi Wat.

Thanks for the post, yeah it sure makes the built in FW more beefy.
Perhaps I should have been more specific, I want to see live stats etc. like "netstat -a" provides you with except in a more intuitive presentation.

I'll be upgrading to Vipre Premium which has a built in FW when they've released their first upgrade but until then I'm sticking with PC Tools Firewall, totally bug free so far.

    Thanks again.

I understand what you're looking for regarding live stats, and certainly Win fw won't provide that, at least not on its own. There is a complimentary and lightweight program for it here: http://www.sphinx-soft.com/Vista/order.html that might help, though the free version is pretty limited. One of the 3rd party renderings you mention will probably best provide what you're seeking.

I guess I'm looking for a 64bit firewall myself (Hurry up OA). Comodo 4 totally screwed my Avast install. It wouldn't update at all. Then, when I uninstalled Comodo, I had to reinstall Avast because the service stopped working and I couldn't get it started again.

Outpost ticked me off. The free version doesn't support Win 7, but does support Vista.

Hey Narxis, thanks for the suggestion. I may very well look into that until OA releases their 64 version. I'm wanting to get into HIPS as well, which I is I looked at both Comodo and Outpost.

Edit: Tried ZA, it had to go. It's too basic.
