I have the previous build to the latest Smart security & would like to install the latest build. However I am finding this impossible as Eset is unable to close down all running processes, I can through much fiddling stop all but the shell & end up with an error code, & in the end I ended up imaging back to the earlier build. Can someone explain the correct method of updating as not only I have this problem but those who I have recommended Eset SS too. Using Vista all updates on a new DELL 4 core, 4 GIG RAM, 32 bit OS.

    Thanks in anticipation.

You shouldn't have to stop any services. Download the latest version and click the installer. It should install over the top of the older version asking if you would like to keep your current settings in the process.

Or you can uninstall the older version and install the newer version.

Still no joy, even after removing Eset totally including services, all non legacy registry entries & all Eset folders I get an error number. I did some research & it seems I need to contact Eset which I have done although I must say they are not within the time frame I was given. So I'll put this as resolved.

When my license runs out I'm moving to an alternative AV & firewall. I've been an Eset customer for many years but it seems the tech support don't care. I think it's a case of Eset getting a bit big for their boots. It happens. The latest Norton which I wouldn't have had within a hundred yards of my PC seem to have sorted bloat etc if the Beta testers on pcadvisor.co.uk are anything to go by & updates in real time. There is also the free at the moment MS AV, which in a few tests has come out tops so the field has widened.

    Hello Trollton,

Have you tried using our uninstaller tool and then installing the latest build?

Also, I have sent you a PM to follow up on the lack of response from tech support.

    Thank you,
    Richard

That worked a treat, within half hour reinstalled & firewall setup & C imaged, thanks a million. Great service from you.

I don't get it, why don't you make the program auto-update itself to latest
builds and versions? Like almost ALL other AV programs do?
Uninstall/install or install over the latest build sucks, and sometimes it fails also and a mess for nothing,

Like some other people say on the forum "Eset is not what it used to be anymore".
So don't make it bloated with a flashy GUI and sh*t, keep it clean as before and work on the smart security instead.

The answer is simple - because we want to protect our customers and whittle down potential issues to the bare minimum. Minor builds usually only contain fixes to small issues that have been reported and it's not worth installing them for the majority of users not having any issues addressed in newer builds.

Since unlike other software, the security software is tightly integrated with the operating system, upgrading the whole program to a newer version may lead to serious problems. ESET releases a program component update (PCU) only after it has been used for a long time and all less or more severe issues reported by users have been remedied. However, particular modules, such as advanced heuristics, archive support, self-defense etc. are updated automatically with signature updates after they've been tested thoroughly in the ESET's lab and users downloading pre-release updates have not reported any issues during the testing period.
