Paragon, GenieSoft, Acronis?

Hi.

I'm not sure if this post is appropriate for this list but here it is:

I've just bought an external hard drive and I'm trying to make a decision re: what backup software to purchase. I'm thinking of the following:

1. Paragon
2. GenieSoft
3. Acronis

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

you need to decide if you need full system backup or only files backup... I'm using genie manager backup and it does system backup and files backup

i once tried acronis but it was hard to work with so i removed it.

let me know which you decide on?

I decided to purchase Genie Soft's Backup-Up Manager Home. I've done so because, even given some of the excellent reviews of the latest Acronis product, I've also read that Acronis still has a few "bugs" to work out with it.

I will suggest Acronis. Atleast you must try it once.

 

I have tried recent versions of Paragon and GenieSoft.

For images, Paragon strikes me as the better choice. It's just geared that way.

For data backups, GenieSoft struck me as the better choice. (This is on a work PC where very un-techie users need to do daily, manually started backups.)

Can't give a user opinion about Acronis TI. It doesn't interest me. (At home, I cold image using ShadowProtect Desktop (image from boot CD, not Windows.)

 

Having used every imaging application I could find, I've come to the conclusion that there are a select few that could do a great job; ShadwProtect, Active @ Disk Image, Macrium Reflect, and Image for Windows. But I keep coming back to Drive Snapshot. In my opinion it's just plain better than anything else I've tried. You can use .bat files with it in conjunction is command line options. I can image any drive on my system from the context menu in two clicks, give it a filename like $disk-$month-$day-$year-$hour$minute.sna. As long as you are comfortable creating a PE disc I think you're good to go. Pair that with something like TBOSD and I think you'd be hard pressed to find anything better.

If you are looking for file backup only, not partition, I've had a lot of luck with the free version of SyncBack. It does everything I could ever want.

Great info n8chavez, just what I was looking for.

I took a look at Active @ disk image, noticed you can have it on three machines for the price. Menu seems straight-forward as well.

Just a question, a family member's laptop is under warranty, and if the hard drive needs to be replaced, would the best method be to install imaging program, make a full image to an external drive, and when the laptop hard drive is replaced with a new one, then manufacturer (asus) will automatically re-install operating system, I then re-install the imaging program and load the image?

And from my understanding, if you bought a brand new hard drive yourself, you could install the hard drive, run the imaging boot CD, and then re-image from there?

I went with Paragon. Its free, fast, does full and incremental, nice easy GUI, and best of all a scheduler so I can set it and forget it. I have it set to make a backup to my external every 2 days at 3AM.

For strictly file backups check out GFI Backup. It has a great interface. I believe it used to be Titan Backup.

 

I use ShadowProtect for disk imaging (I bought it some 2 or 3 years ago). The only problem I have is that I've actually never used it for this purpose. Instead, and only rarely, I've used it for data/file backup. But like I say, I've just purchased GenieSoft's Backup Manager Home for data/file backup.

Try Macrium Reflect (full version) : both the image backup and the file backup are blazingly fast. The WinPE recovery CD is nice too.

 

Well I would have to recommend Macrium Reflect, it is very stable and has never failed to restore an image or let me down in any way. Plus it uses VB script as definitions for scheduled backups which offers a lot of customization and possibilities. Like N8Chavez said about Drivesnapshot, you can also create a backup in two clicks with Macrium. IMO no other imaging solution has proved as stable and reliable as Macrium for me, but I have to say if I couldn't have Macrium I would use Drive Snapshot next and then Paragon.

Acronis is a good program that has potential to be awesome but it is constantly plagued by bugs/
