I have been using Look'n'Stop now for some years in my XP Home 32-bit systeem, together with Phant0m's Ruleset (deLuxe). I've always loved the firewall because of its good protection, transparency and lightness.

A couple of weeks ago I've installed, after a format C, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, the usual software and Look'n'Stop 2.07 64-bit. To my surprise the internetpages were slower than I was used to in XP. At first I didn't think Look'n'Stop could have to do anything with it but a lot of search didn't bring any solution whatsoever.

Today I put back an Acronis-image of my last XP-system (December 25 2009), with about the same amount of software I have now in my W7-system. Internet was as fast as always. Then I installed W7 32-bit with the Windows firewall activated. internet was as fast as in XP. After that I installed Look'n'Stop and suddenly internet was very slow again, pages really building op in stead of just being there with one click. Finally I put back the W7 64-bit image I made this morning and the same happened: internet fast without Look'n'Stop, slow with it.

With google I tried to find some more information about this but didn't see any, in this forum neither, hence my question here: do more people have this problem, and if so, is there a solution for it? Or did I do something wrong, somehow somewhere?

I'm working with a Core I7 920 processor, Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P motherboard, Realtek RTL8168D/8111D PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Adapter, 6GB memory and ATI Radeon HD 4650 graphic card.

Isn't there anybody who has experienced some differences in speed with XP and then W7 (64-bit), using Look'n'Stop? I would like to know if this 'problem' occurs more often. If not it must be something in my system. Please let me know :)

If you ‘temporarily’ disable Internet Filtering layer, does it bring back the www surfing performance?

I'm sorry, Phant0m, it doesn't make any difference, but nevertheless thanks for your reply.
I think I'll check some other firewalls, just to see if this will bring any change in the problem. With the Windows 7 firewall the internet is as fast as always, but normally that wouldn't be my first choice :cautious:

The idea is to disable Look ‘n’ Stop protection layers to see which one 'that may be’ the culprit here. And right now you the first I’ve read on here to report such an experience, and you very well be the only one to help us figure what exactly is happening and introduce an Look ‘n’ Stop patch, .. if Look ‘n’ Stop is at fault here.

Disabling Internet Filtering Layer indicates to me that a ruleset isn’t at fault or the Look ‘n’ Stop packet-filtering layer.

... Like many, I’m using Windows 7 x64 and Look ‘n’ Stop v2.07 is working smoothly and speedy as is also my Internet and system performance.

    Regards and best of luck..,

    Hi HankPiano

I have to agree with Phant0m, I have found no problems with Win7U x64, LnS, and Phant0ms Deluxe Ruleset.

    Take Care

Well, I hope it didn't stay unnoticed that I added a question mark to the title of my topic start. It wasn't my intention at all to present as a fact that W7 x 64 was slower with Look'n'Stop and Phant0m's Ruleset. I have been using both for years and I've always been very content about it, never had any problem.

But it should be clear that, in the actual situation, I've also done some effort to prove myself wrong by playing around with those Acronis-images. However, I can't simply deny: when I put back an XP-image internet browsing IS considerably faster. I think by now it's obvious it is NOT a general problem of Look'n'Stop/Phant0m in combination with W7 x64, it 's just something in MY system and that's exactly I wanted to be sure of.

For the time being I don't know what it is; I updated every driver for every piece of software I could find, making sure it was the x64-driver, but still no improvement in the 'problem'. It's one of those mysteries mister Gates donated to the world, apart from his charityfund ;)

I went through the same problem. As it turned out I uninstalled Nod 32 and installed their latest Beta, which helped a little.

I finally uninstalled NOD32 completely and went with Sunbelt's Viper Beta for a night and day difference in speed!

In the beginning I would have sworn LnS was the problem and am very happy to report it was not the culprit.

Well, that's strange. After reading your post I decided to give it a try, uninstalled both NOD32 and Look'n'Stop (LnS). Browsing was very fast, as it used to be with XP. I Put back NOD32 and browsing was still very fast, no change. Then I put back LnS 2.07 64-bit and suddenly internet was very slow again. Don't misunderstand me: it is really a big difference. But apparently NOD32 doesn't play any role in it. For the time being I'm using the Windows Firewall, not my first choice but may be I'll find a solution for this strange problem.

In the meantime I have tried PCTools and Comodo firewalls and they both make the internet browsing slow, at least as slow as LnS. So, after all it is not a LnS problem. Maybe some piece of hardware(?) If I find the solution I'll let you know.

I wouldn’t say it doesn’t..., you didn’t mention about installing Look ‘n’ Stop with NOD32 fully removed. Usually NOD32 and Look ‘n’ Stop works well together, perhaps things has changed?

Still would be interesting to see what part of Look ‘n’ Stop may be at culprit here... Did you even try disabling all the Look ‘n’ Stop protection layers (Internet Filtering, Application Filtering, Protocol Filtering) and testing...? ;)

Wow! I just did that and guess what...internet browsing is as fast as it always used to be, I open a site and WHAM, it's there. Many thanks, Phant0m. I think that's what ChickC also was pointing out
but I didn't understand it right: it's the combination NOD32 - LnS which causes the slowness, not one of the two apart.

Isn't that strange, I mean, wouldn't there be more people with this problem? I have been using both NOD32 and LnS for many years, without any difficulty whatsoever and now suddenly the co-operation between the two seems a bit disturbed. Is that a reason to look further into this 'problem' or does it happen so rarely that it's not worth the trouble? Apart from this I wonder why some people have this problem and other people don't have it at all. Anyway, if there is a solution or a workaround I would like to hear it because I like the combination NOD32 - LnS....and for the scanner I just payed a license for a new year ;)

I too have been using LNS and NOD32 for more yeras than I care to remember. The problem started to appear when I went to Vista x64 and than Windows7 x64. The ping rate kept going higher with each revision of NOD32 until it reached the point where I disabled internet filtering which pretty well made NOD32 useless, but did give me back the speed and ping rate I wanted.

If you want to go to the trouble to see the full impact install NOD 32 again and than go to speedtest.net and check the difference in pings to one of the test sites. Without NOD 32 I get 12 pings to NY and 525 with NOD32. I gave up almost a full 2 year license when ESET said that could not be happening and if it was NOD32 was not at fault even though I submitted before and after screen captures of the ping rates.

I can't say for sure if LNS or NOD32 is at fault, but I can say for sure that there is no problem with LNS and Vipre beta. I also can say that any time I had a problem with LNS either Frederick or Phantom responded quickly and went way beyond what I expected to solve the problem. So far the tech support at Sunbelt has also been good. Maybe the problem with ESET is mine in that I do not speak German but their tech support is non existent and that is why I will be staying with LNS and Vipre.

I see your point, ChickC, and sure it is something to keep in mind when dealing with this problem. As I mentioned before I installed, apart from eachother, the Comodo and PCTools firewalls, in both cases NOD32 was running in my system and in both cases internet browsing was getting very slow, compared to the situation without NOD32.

At the same time it's clear that many people do not have this problem, so the question seems to be what exactly, in NOD32 or in a specific system, can possibly cause this decline in speed. And since this seems to be a NOD32-case, rather than a LnS-case, it's may be better to continue in the Eset-forum. But of course solutions or good ideas are very welcome here :)

I started this topic in the Eset NOD32-forum, Marcos advised me to try NOD32 bèta 4.2.22, I did so and as far as I can see now the problem appears to be solved. May be good news for ChickC too :)

As another user of LNS 2.07 & NOD32 (NOD32 was freshly installed in January 2010) on a Win7-64bit system I tried what phantOm suggested:

1.) ping-time with LNS fully activated (application filtering + internet filtering) = 32ms

2.) ping-time with LNS halfly deactivated (application filtering + NO internet filtering) = 32ms

3.) ping-time with fully LNS deactivated (NO application filtering + NO internet filtering) =32ms

So, my system seems to be running ok with LNS and NOD32.
However, I know this doesn't help the people with the reported speed problems.

    Regards,
    Thomas :)
