if you see suse every thing is straight forward no confusion

but fedora is some wicked in this way never show you all his cards

so i add few gui child play tricks which might help newbies which install it from live cd even me when i forgot any :D

    1. fedora shutdown button on panel

right click on menu bar click add to panel there you got shutdown button and then right click on move and adjust it where you want it to be right click and lock it

    2. set single click and media handling default

open my computer or user_home click on edit then click on preference in file-management go to second tab set your mouse click to single mode and to set media go to last tab media set from there.

    3. fedora got its package manager call add/remove software but i prefer yumex please install yumex for gui yum package manager
    yum install yumex

why yumex because its so easy from yumex go to group on system you can find too like unrar to unrar your files
from sound and media you find vlc like a child play

files from administration tools you find many gui tool to set root password users configure network boot firewall root password gui ....gparted and many other which are not installed my default on live cd which add more power in gui mode

    :)

    4. many people want to disable selinux now there are 2 ways to do it

    (a) one from text editor

    [root@localhost /]# cd etc/selinux
    [root@localhost selinux]# vi config

    now please change

    SELINUX=enforcing

    to

    SELINUX=disable

now why i use vi editor if some one got stuck on login from gui mode most 1st chances might me selinux problem you can boot from alt F2 and login in root from CLI mode and do the above thing from vi editor

    (b) now the second way gui type

after installation you can install from yumex click on all and then search for system-config-selinux(policycoreutils-gui) its a gui for selinux

from system>SELinux management from system default enforcing mode disable it.

now these question many people ask including my self :D

Does fedora got wubi like ubuntu?

How can i install fedora without messing with my installed Microsoft windows ?

Ubuntu/mint there is option called install it on free space i like fedora but i dont want to format my default windows of my laptop/desktop?

Now this is my favourite sin on fedora :D

goal is to achieve installation of fedora on laptop/desktop .....or on any other partition without removing its original content

****** warning please make a backup recovery dvd of your OS and backup of all your important data before trying this evil act**********

**** Microsoft partitions become pretty slow after reaching above 65-70% so before resize its partition please keep in mind that you leave enough space for Microsoft partition for example you got 250 gb harddisk and your Microsoft is 50 gb leave mircosoft till 100 gb atleast so you got 20 gb till reach 70% of your disk space ******

now you got the trick here what we do is resize partition and format rest the left partition make ext 3 for / from gparted and during fedora installation we go to advance mode and leave ext3 as it is (without formatting) give the / path and install on it

without messing the whole partition this is most easy and simple way i found to do it

to do this trick you need to cheat a little use gparted, partition magic or mint ubuntu live cd from that cd run tool called gparted

most of guys think its very stupid and idiotic trick funny true :D

but its work trust me :thumb:

Fedora has an option to use the largest free space.
When i installed fedora on my laptop a few days ago it installed grub and corrected added windows 7 as other in the grub boot list.
since i use windows 7 more i choose other to be default at the bootloader stage of the install.

I do like Fedora but due to the nature of it aka bleeding edge something always breaks. With fedora 10 after a network manager update wireless didnt work. With Fedora 11 install was text mode only and X didnt work.

No problems with 12 yet but im sure there will be at somepoint.

    Cant wait for RHEL6

try autoten it is a small application that sets things up for you such as installing sun java, setting up sudo, installing all codecs so you can play any music file and even watch commercial dvd's

Some nice, helpful information you've got listed there, mack_guy. Obviously you've put some time and effort into this. Congrats. It almost convinced me to try Fedora once again.... ;).

    Later...

lodore auto ten is really nice tool thanks there is another one called easyLife mention by dedoimedo

special thanks to mrk and lodore for giving idea about easy tools like autoten and easy life

    http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/fedora-12.html

java can also be easily installed form yumex as well

and for sudo please check this

    http://www.my-guides.net/en/content/view/125/26/1/1/

    i use su than sudo

    and for yum

    http://www.my-guides.net/en/content/view/125/26/1/2/

i want disto for day to day surfing fedora gives good net performance and minimized downloads through presto my net speed is only between 40-50KB/s and 3 system on that speed :D so fedora save a lot of download updates i disable auto download but when i do update its save a lot

    antivirus on fedora 12

althou no antivirus is needed in fedora at all
but its very good additional tool to scan your pen drives and your other window partitions plus you can install multiple anti virus at once without giving you a trouble

    avast

    http://www.avast.com/linux-home-edition

download it and then easy way is to right click and open with packet installer it will auto download all needed packages it need same way you can install opera and bleachbit rpm as well (ccleaner type tool on linux) form their original sites just doing like you do it windows

if you dont get gui on applications>accessories>avast

    from root type

    # avastgui

put your home license key its work as charm.

    bitdefender

    http://download.bitdefender.com/repos/

many ways to install 2 most easy ones

    (a) 1 Install the BitDefender-repo package:

    rpm -i http://download.bitdefender.com/repos/rpm/bitdefender/i586/BitDefender-repo-1-1.noarch.rpm

    2. yum update

    3. open from yumex and from all search bitdefender

    (b) if you dont want to install bitdefender repo click on below link here and from download page and download bitdefender-scanner and bitdefender-scanner-gui right click on scanner install it with package installer and then same way install bitdefender-scanner-gui

    after that from root type

    #bdgui

you get the gui mode of bit defender please put your free home key

for vidoe codecs and kde installation

from yumex click on group and from group go to sound and video from there install gstreamers--plugins-good and gstreamers -plugins-ugly it will give you all the codes for Totem Movie Player .....etc or you can play any movie on Totem Movie Player it ask for missing codecs let it download from net download the same so both ways you get the require codecs

for open office go to office/productivity

kde desktop environment check the kde box it wont install everything but it does kinda group install all necessary packages and kde defaults

adobe flash player and adobe reader

from adobe site download yum for linux right click and install the repo from adobe then from yumex search adobe you get both flash player and reader install it from there

yumex is excellent tool make every thing so easy and gui form fedora :thumb:

I'd been using fedora since the very first version of it but now have to give it up simply because FC12 never works with nvidia proprietary driver any more.

sorry i have gone to buy grossery thanks very much to indore

i might have posted same link which indore has already posted give by leigh123linux

for ati there is no support for fedora 12 as far i know and if there is any i dont know about it because i got all nvidia cards

    http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=155503

if you know your type of nvidia you can use yumex as well to do this job

    i use 8600gt from nvidia

there are some good guides worth looking regarding fedora 12

    http://docs.fedoraproject.org/
    http://www.fedoraguide.info/index.php?title=Main_Page
    http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f11.html
    http://www.my-guides.net/en/content/view/174/26/

but for nvidia graphic installation on fedora 12 i recommended every one to check leigh123linux link of fedora forums he did the superb job just in 4 steps

given by lodore i had installed my nvidia 8600gt by the same way given there .....at that time :thumb:

sharkking and linuxforall please check lodore link and no never used tool like auto ten and easylife but i am pretty sure they are nice ones just like ubuntu tweak

    Thanks for your post.
Actually I've been following those links the whole time. At first, actually nvidia drivers seemed to work quite well. However, after a while, it suffers random freeze and crashes to the point that I had to downgrade to FC11. Seems a lot of people have the same problem. The worse thing is that when it crashes, there's no dump or anything like that. Hope that'll be fixed in FC13.
    Cheers

but that happen when you install many drivers at once i mean pae kmod akmod or due to selinux when you off selinux please when you switch it on back start it in permissive mode 1st before putting to enforcing 3rd most important reason i dont mess with drivers

please dont type funny scripts given on forums without knowing them most the chances you mess with your system and you blame fedora for that it happen me all the time when my fedora crash 98% i confess its because of me i dont blame distro for that it some wired i try to do and it crashed :D

if you still feel problem with your card please post your card type on fedora forums there are geeks there like leigh123linux and many real guys who actually write fedora and redhat codes

now fedora is change pretty much i feel from 7 its pretty stable as compare to previous ones fedora 13 might be best disto hope for best as red is expected to made on it
many redhat guys are now full time paid for fedora coding to make it more stable :thumb:

Well to be honest, I started to use RedHat since redhat linux 7 and I can say that I know what I did with those stuffs. I never used those scripts on those forums without checking what they were doing. However, if you have time to check you'll find plenty of bug reports regarding nvidia drivers with no answer at all. Hopefully FC13 will have it fixed cos Fedora is still my favorite.

    @mack_guy911

    Thank you sir!

Fedora is my favorite distro by a long shot, but I have preference for others occasionally for some of the conveniences that you highlight here.

Thank you for taking the time to share these details. They are making me want to reboot as I type.

I'm not sure i've missed something here but why would you not just install the KDE version and use autoten. You've then got Fedora running KDE, codecs and nvidia driver right there. Simples.

installing rpm fusion 2 ways 1st (needed for Installing Free and Nonfree Repositories for codes vlc nvidia graphics .....many other software)

    su -c 'rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm'

give your root password then install it

    2nd easy way
Download packages right click and install both free and non-free just like in opera screen shot above :D
