Do you believe everything you read? Especially from a competitors site?

Not that i would worry too much about a single test, but the test is actually performed by NSS Labs and not Trend Micro. Trend Micro just show the results from the test on their website.

Funny how the AV vendors pick the tests and numbers that suits them best to post at their website.

As far as I know, the testing organization in question doesn't adhere to AMTSO principles.

Actually Marcos your statement is not true. I just checked their website and if you go to http://nsslabs.com/ then click on anti-malware products and then scroll down at the very bottom of the page to read their disclaimer. It reads:

"NSS Labs is an active member of the Anti-Malware Testing Standards Organization (AMTSO). All testing is conducted closely following the AMTSO guidelines."

Moreover the President of NSSLabs is Rick Moy http://nsslabs.com/general/management.html and Rick Moy is also a member of the AMTSO Review Analysis Board, pleased refer to: http://amtso.org/amtso---boards---review-analysis-board.html.

The test conducted by the NSSLABS where TrendMicro was placed first was indeed AMTSO compliant and it is credible.

    Thanks.

closely following does not necessarily mean following all guidelines. So, how close is close

Rick Moy, the president of the NSSLABS is best suited to answer that question since he is after all part the AMTSO review board. So I think that in that case that close is extremely close.

    Thanks.

No, the AMTSO itself is best suited

you seem to miss the point here that the NSSLABS president is part of the AMTSO review board. Consequently, he must have an in-depth knowledge of the AMTSO requirements in order for a test to be considered AMTSO compliant; don't you think?

As far as I know the AMTSO does not directly review nor certify tests and therefore the AMTSO will not directly state that a performed test is or is not AMTSO compliant. Thus, as long as an organization like NSSLABS or AV-Comparatives, for that matter, stay true to the AMTSO requirements such tests should be and actually are AMTSO compliant.

    Thanks.

Seems alot like symantics or denial - Not sure how helpful, though.

Almost EVERY test has one ABOVE another, all you can do is chose the one YOU believe & use it

Agreed I think people who have in-depth knowledge know what to say and closely following means exactly that :)

as a matter of fact i used all of the major av suites (security suites), not av alone. they will not and must not protect your pc 100%, only commonsense and little bit of know how to say away from bad thing is more than enough to keep your pc clean for ages, trust me on this fact. as well as nod32 is doing a good job and lastly only one thing testing lab never testing 0 day threat, they only testing samples what they have. i like to say about these test is what the av engine finds thats matter, not how much they missed is not matter at all (i.e. if nod32 finds 3 rootkits and other company missed this, then the point of the testing is worthless. and another point in testing and publish result no testing company reveal what nasties they tested, but instead they will only say how many number (70,000 or 1 million samples).this is true fact buddy. if you still do not understand my core point what i am trying to say, then i am sorry for wasted your valuable time, bye bye. :p

Not to be disagreeable, but this really isn't possible anymore. Trusted websites are being used to disseminate malware more and more these days. Thinking that malware comes only from email or disreputable sites is naive.

I take it that using common sense also covers sandboxing couples with a no-script addon : )

Correct as far as it goes. See http://www.amtso.org/amtso---faqs---will-amtso-endorse-my-methodology-and-competence-to-test.html. However, I hear that several AMTSO members weren't convinced by the NSS tests, and that AMTSO will be releasing a review analysis to say whether they think it complied or not.

I think it's naive to assume that because Rick Moy is on the Review Board, his testing must be perfect.

What is it with you guys? Really, polarised discussions such as this are fruitless for all concerned. Whenever any test shows a particular product in a bad light, the fanboys of that product will immediately jump up and down and attempt to rubbish the test, claiming it is flawed by virtue of invalid testing methodology, or untrustworthy testers, or the test has been bought by some competing vendor. In reality this in no way discredits the test, nor does it establish any credibility whatsoever on those attempting to discredit. When counter argument descends to the depths of claiming it to be a matter of semantics (note the spelling here guys - the word has nothing to do with Symantec!), you know you have lost.

So, do yourselves a favour and decide for yourself whether or not a particular product is suitable for you. It's no good rubbishing those tests which don't support your particular choice, or lauding those that do. This is exactly the privilege you'd seek to deny others!

You said several members I presume not all were not convinced. Could you tell which members were convinced and which members were not. Also, you heard that from where exactly? could you reference your statement?

    Thanks.

Then let's say "closely following." This isn't about NSS: it's about not reading everything you read on the Internet.

Heard from an AMTSO member. As I understand it, at least three members in good standing have to support a review analysis request, which was the case, but I can't share names with you, since AMTSO doesn't do it that way. Of course, he could have been lying through his teeth, since there's been no public announcement, but the essential point still stands. Being a member of AMTSO is not a guarantee of good practice.
