i know i can set it to check however often i want to but really how often do they release updates? it seems i only get maybe one or 2 a day where with norton nis2010 installed i use to get the pulse updates (i know avast doesnt do that though) plus a reg update almost every hour or so? sometimes i could click update with norton and 5 min later see another non pulse update? i didnt think avast was this slow with the updates. wondering if i should switch back since i still own lic's to both. i liked getting updates that often.. is this normal from avast or maybe just that they are so busy with the new version.. ?? i was considering updating all my office systems to this from nis2010 just because it runs awesome.. just curious thanks

With the free version you only get 2 updates more or less each day, but the paid version also have pulse updates. Anyway you dont have to be "paranoiac" IMO with 1 update everyday is enought.

They don't have Pulse updates for the 5.0 release- VLK has said that this may return in 5.1 etc. Frequency of updates is the same for normal and paid users as far as I'm aware.

Considering the frequency of infections I've experienced (YMMV) I would say one update per 3 years would be sufficient, so 2 per day seems perfect :) .

I thought I read in their forum if they put in Norton like pulse updates they were going to have to triple their severs so they decided not to do it. o_O

Does it really mater how many times a day updates are released? If the updates they do release have good detection rates why worry about getting many :doubt:

Well, there's a valid point to arguing for more updates per day. Malware truly is released that fast these days. However, even if an AV released updates once per hour, chances are extremely good that a new malware will be released in the time you're waiting for that next update. And, if the AV doesn't detect it yet, you're still screwed no matter how often you get updates.

Getting infected by a brand spanking new malware while waiting for that next hourly update is a bit extreme of a scenario, but still plausible. That's why realistically being updated 2-3 times per day is perfectly reasonable.

I agree - however, some AV don't release new updates on the weekend ...

Usually they need about 2 days to add my samples to database. There is no repley from avast lab, so I manually recheck samples after each avast update.
Most of the samples that I'm sending them almost every day are later detected as a trojan.gen - malware.gen - because they are tweaking in fact really good generic detections.
