Have you considered trying Jetico Personal Firewall? It has advanced rules and is easy and lightweight. You'll have to pay for v2, but v1 is Freeware. I've tried pretty much everything out there and always end up staying with Jetico. It's been my firewall of choice since I stopped using Kerio v2.1.5, which would be my second choice of a firewall that meets your criteria.

Jetico doesn't seem to be too popular here on Wilders - I'm not sure why that is, but it can't hurt for you to give it a try in a VM and see what you think.

I'm using Windows XP firewall along with a built in hardware firewall in my at&t U-verse modem (gateway as at&t calls it). Is that good enough, or should I use a third party software firewall? I'm running Avast 5 free AV, if you needed my AV info.

I'm not a firewall expert, so I don't know what SPI is. I just check the settings, and I don't see anything listed for SPI.

Are you saying I should be ok just to using the at&t hardware firewall with XP's firewall? I really don't need a third party software firewall?

    Actually it's "stateful packet inspection".

These are under firewall > advanced settings. Do you have any of these options?

Everything on mine is the same as yours except yours shows an Outbound and Inbound Control heading, mine only has Outbound Control heading. Under Outbound I have all the traffic types listed as you, but I have no Inbound heading, and no traffic types.

Any idea why Inbound is not listed in my settings?

This term is used so loosely by vendors, that the fact that something (software or a hardware) "has" SPI actually means nothing. You can't help but ask yourself how is this SPI implemented.

    Older version of firmware?

You should start a new thread.

    Hi whitedragon:

These settings for I/O show what is allowed through:(

Do you want all others to be allowed? IMHO these need tightening up... or are you using the vendor defaults? vendors make settings loose!

This ATT device, is it a router or a vendor modem? If it is a modem then if it were me I'd put in a router ASAP and use it to be my primary H/W FW. This is even more NB if user is wireless.

    Just some thoughts.... all free!

The firewall in Vista and Win7 both have inbound and outbound control.

How would a third party firewall worsen inbound filtering? Thanks

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned SoftPerfect's PF. Very light, requires knowledge of protocols and ports to write proper rules, but has a good default set to start with. Worth looking at. (http://www.softperfect.com/products/firewall/)
