page file on dedicated partition on same disk as os?

hey guys,

ive brought back to life an old laptop i have, 1.9 gig processor, 2 gigs ram.

what im thinking about doing, is using this laptop for my "stereo" ive got a nice amplifier and a good set of speakers, i'll connect this laptop to my external hard drive with my music library, and connect the laptop to my amplifier with a y-cable and a barrel cable. then i'll just basically use the laptop as a stereo to play my music.

anyways on to my question - ive read that its best to have the page file on a dedicated partition on a second drive. this laptop has only one hard drive, so i made a partition at the end of the drive and put my page file on it, leaving a small 100 meg page file on the c: drive.

i was wondering opinions, will this give me a slight performance increase, or would it have been just as well or preferable to leave the page file on the c: drive? im testing it now but cant seem to tell a difference either way.

The advantage is in having your pagefile on a separate spindle (or RAID array) than your OS is on. Thus...at least 2x hard drives.

Having it on another partition on the same single hard drive as your OS...nah, no difference in performance.

For basic users, they won't notice a difference. For those who run very HEAVY programs...one's that are constantly causing hard drive hits as it reads/loads data from the program, those are the users who benefit from this.

 

What YeOlde said above, but why would you even need a pagefile if you're gonna use the lappy as the music machine only?

 

If your running 64 bit with 4GB or more and don't do extensive movie animations, I wouldn't worry about it. I have seen, however, Windows XP increase in performance by having a special 5GB first partition on a hard drive other than the OS drive used for the pagefile with system managed cache size.

I was also wondering about this speed-up tip. As long as it is on a separate disk; there will be a noticeable and significant speed increase? In my case XP (all updates and no RAID).

As it easy to do; I will! Just curious if there are any pertinent links. I will report back either way... maybe.

With 2GB RAM (and assuming the laptop is running WinXP), XP will use the page file very sparingly - so I wouldn't even mess with it.
