Did you change the settings for avast! v5 from the default? If I remember correctly (and I'm almost certain I do remember correctly! ), avast! v5 will not detect PUPs by default on the Windows Explorer (i.e. right-click) scan. I remember having to change this setting myself. So if this is how you scanned – and I'm pretty sure you did it this way, because you probably had a folder containing your malware – you probably should change the settings of the Windows Explorer scan and then retest.

Regarding the behaviour shield, how does the 'sensors' work? How is it different to a typical behavioural blocker?

 

The sensors are attached to the file system, registry, and network monitors and they identify suspicious file activity and report it to the "honeypot" where it is further examined. This module then notifies the user if the file is suspicious or not and uploads the file to the Avast Virus Lab for more analysis and a definite report. It is different from other behavior blockers because it does not detect infections, it monitors suspicious fille activity and lets the user know about it. They did this because it provides them with a constant flow of new malware straight from their users. You can find all kind of information on WWW.avast.com or post in their forum \, they know more about it. But this come from the support page.

i installed avast 5 free and it how the behav shield showed an infection that was blocked, how come i can't see it in a log file when i click show report and it just always shows avast 5 auto generated and just a time. that it. no other info on this at all.

yup i am. i had no popup or anything. avast 5 is nice but it seems more reports needs work.

dicksmith please would you test a-square antimalware and malwarebytes and superantispyware against those viruses and tell me me their score and percentage please. Thanks in advance. The reason is in almost all malware tests I saw that tested a-squered antimalware it always has highest detection score.

The set did not contain any ancient Dos viruses, only recent Malware, sorry, I do not share viruses.

I think it makes every sense, how do we know Avast 4.8 had a worse and less capable engine. You only have to look at Kaspersky as an example, with each new release, detection ratings have fallen.

I tested avast! U3 edition and avast! Free v5 with a folder containing ~6000 viruses but they are old. v5 detected 5555 malware. The U3 edition detected 5727 malware. Both of the programs had latest definition updates (100123-0). Even if most of them are ancient, how could the programs produce different results with same virus definitions? If there are changes in engine like generic detection capabilities etc, i can understand it for the ancient ones. But dicksmith says his samples are new.

I think I'll go back to v4.8. Actually many ppl are experiencing problems with v5 but it didn't cause me any problems at all. Yet again I'll feel more secured with v4.8. And btw I hate the UI of v5, it looks so immature. I perefer the enhanced UI of v4.8 pro.

Note: I turned on PUP detection, selected high heuristics, "test whole files" and "ignore virus targeting" for the explorer scanner in v5. All of the settings were set to highest.

dicksmith, in case you missed it, Vlk is one of avast developers. And it's common courtesy to submit missed viruses after a test.

 

I will submit the missed samples to all the relevant a/v company's, tested, not just Avast.

Don't take it personally but it is thanks to the behavior such as the one posted above that viruses spread around more easily and still cause damage to the community. Not sharing missed malware is unprofessional if not even criminal.

I expect by the time Avast 5 is tested by the major comparative sites, we will see detection ratings considerably improved around the 98% mark.

Well you can differentiate between non-professional and professional(developers) by looking at their names (they appear in orange different from ours that appear in black) you can also have a look at this

 

It has already been tested by AV-Comparitives, and if I am not mistaken it done pretty good.

 

I ran 5.0 Free version for a day[with just Outpost Pro]
and had to remove it because of so much
hassle...stalls...freezes...IE8 would not load
forced reboots just to get things running!
removed it and back to Outpost OSSa and things are great
again

 

I installed version 5 a few days ago and I noticed that the e-mail scanner bugs are fixed.
This has been stable and surprisingly light here so far.
I'm using PCTools Firewall Plus and they seem to work together without conflicts.

 

These must be REALLY ANCIENT! Kudos to Avast for flagging still 5824!

This sample must be waaayyyy old! You should celebrate that Avast actually flagged so many.
