tbh thats something ive always wondered about the P2P shield and the IM Shield, but in the end using my own judgement i just dont bother installing those 2, as well as the email shield.

I never really thought about that. I assume they catch malware before it hits the disk, much like the web shield does. If not, I wonder myself what purpose they serve.

Maybe it's just hard to determine the root cause of his/her issue(s). Like I said it could be a conflict with a mfg driver, who knows. I'm completely speculating here.

If someone doesn't like a product, they are free to make their own decisions. Someone calling a product crap won't prevent me from using it, if I actually like the product that is.

They use the same engine but the network shield is a little different. This is pretty much what I get from it, the network shield is a two part shield consisting of a url blocker for known websites, and a light weight Intrusion Detection System.

You can set protection settings to high levels for those shields (web, e-mail, p2p, im) without affecting overall system performance. For example "all packers" option is selected for those shields, so are the other high protection options. Hence, most of the open doors are monitored thoroughly and the system does not slow down (otherwise it would be a big system hog to provide that level of protection with only file system shield). And as far as I know, (in v4.8 ) p2p and im protection modules work with file system shield, i mean their protection also depend on file system shield settings. But I don't know if it's different in v5.

Note: Network and behavioral shields work differently from those ones.

So the url blocker uses a different blacklist to Avast's file scanner?

How so (particularly the behavioural shield)?

Network shield uses a blacklist for URLs and the blacklist is updated via vps update. Bad URLs are aborted when system attempts to connect. Network shield is not browser-dependant. It is not related to file shields nor virus definitions.

In the Help file it says: "Network shield - monitors all network activity and blocks any threats that are detected on the network. It also blocks access to known malicious websites based on the avast! database of infected URLs."

But I have never come across any other warnings than URL blocking from Network shield.

From the Help file: "Behavior shield - monitors all activity on your computer and detects and blocks any unusual activity that might indicate the presence of malware. It does this by continuously monitoring your computer's entry points using special sensors to identify anything suspicious."

I think its sensors are also updated via vps update. Again it is obvious that it is not related to file shields or virus definitions.

    Hope this helps. :)

IIRC the network shield protects the system from worms, as well as the URL blocking.

Also, the Behaviour Shield is causing my music in windows media player to stutter every now and then while browsing with chrome.

Perhaps the fact that they've been around since 1982 and therefore have a huge 'brand awareness' factor might have something to do with it.

I found that eicar test files were not detected on saving, only on opening.

All the data that is reported by the sensors that monitor the file system, registry, etc. is sent to the "behavior shield" and is then analyzed and the shield decides whether it is suspicious or not, it doesn't tell you its infected, it reports the suspicious files to you and then gives you the option to send the file to Avast to be analyzed further. It is not behavior module like Threatfire or Mamutu, avast did this to have a constant feed that gives them the latest threats straight from their users, and since they now have over 100 million users I imagine it works well. But don't expect it to block known malware threats, as this is not what it is for.

    Hi!

I manually fixed AdMuncher issue earlier today. Next one: right-click scan is not working for me. Any ideas? :p

    Yes I did. Repair/Uninstall/tweaked settings-> basic -> Speacial Scans.

    No luck. :ouch:

EDIT: LOL. I bought the Pro version. That did the trick. :p

What is your OS? It seems a lot of people are having that Windows Explorer scan issue; maybe it's an OS thing.

I haven't really read the whole thread, but that(or similar) problem has been mentioned before and it was only after installation of Avast, the next restart of PC fixed it.

I did several reboots/installs/uninstalls/repairs without any luck.

Installing Pro version and reboot did a trick. It might be just me. :argh:

Tested Avast 5 free today on a small set of my virus files. The file contained 6.000 viruses.

Avast 4.8 free detected 5802 - 96.7%. Avast 5 detected 5527 - 92.11%.So they need to do some work on it's detection rating. In the same test Avg 9 free detected 5738 - 95.6%. Clamwin detected 4996 - 83.2%. Antivir 9 free detected 5805 - 96.75%. These results and detection ratings are pretty much what I expected, Antivir 1st, Avast 4.8 a close second, Avg 3rd and Clamwin 4th. I excepted a higher detection rating from Avast 5, though I'm sure it will improve in time, other then that it looks very good.

Avast 4.8 is better in detection than Avast 5? Awesome ... :)

    Hi:

dicksmith please would you test a-square antimalware and malwarebytes and superantispyware against those viruses and tell me me their score and percentage please. Thanks in advance. The reason is in almost all malware tests I saw that tested a-squered antimalware it always has highest detection score.
