Last night avast! 5 declared TeraCopy as malware and quarantined it automatically. After reporting it as a false positive, I was unable to restore the file from quarantine, however hard i tried. Earlier, for the first time in 5 months of extensive usage, WMP exhibited glitches in audio playback, immediately after installation of avast!. Overall, if I were to compare the performance impact of avast! 4 and 5, then 4 is definitely much better.

avast! 4.8 is sluggish compared to avast! 5.0.

    Thanks for that info.
That may save me a few headaches.
Now I just have to figure out if it's safer to run Avast without Sandboxie or try another AV and still use Sandboxie.

I haven't seen much talk on using Sandboxie and Avast 5 together, that's why I posted this.

    Thanks again.

I just installed Avast 5 and already ran into some problems.

After re starting the PC three times now, I have lost a few icons in my system tray.

The most notable are Avast and FD-ISR along with a couple of my regular programs that start up with Windows.

Checking task manager shows two instances of Avast running when there used to be five. It also shows the other missing programs as running but just not showing up in the system tray.

Anybody have any ideas before I use FD-ISR to go back to an earlier date to fix these problems?

    Thanks.

Is anyone having issues deleting files from the virus chest, or, for that matter, getting the virus chest to do anything? I can't even select the properties of the files.

For those of you having issues, such as an Internet browsing slowdown, what is your operating system? I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit, and avast! is performing just wonderfully. No file system or web browsing slowdown.

I did, however, have the issue with the Windows Explorer scan (i.e. right-click scan) not showing up after the installation. I also had the avast! icon disappear, along with a few other tray icons. However, after a reboot the problems went away. In general I always reboot after installing/uninstalling any security program, even if it doesn't ask for it. Things just seem to work better that way :) .

When installing the pc boots unexpectedly and 5 isn't installed. Any ideas? Also IE7 and 8 can't be installed due to repeating reboots after installing. Drive is ok. Memory?

    @Kees1958.

Yes - a valid point you made. One should always compare apples with apples and not apples with pears!
I have now re-installed Avast using only the file shield & behaviour shields, (I use Gmail SSL servers for Thunderbird, so a mail shield is useless anyway)and have disabled the scan documents as suggested.
Browsing is fine; a quick scan of a 40GB disc took 6 minutes.
A Windows Explorer right click scan is definitely faster than MSE.
Avast! UI is 4400K and Avast! service is 47150K, according to task manager. These two combined are about the same as MSE used.
Perhaps I will now try it on our Windows7 laptop with 3GB RAM and AMD dual core processor.

Thats close to what Avast uses on my Win7 box. Avast UI- 8,120Kb, AvastSvc-34,656, so thats a little less than what MSE used but not much. Definitely one of the lightest setups Ive used.

XP SP3 OS, Cable connection, router without a software firewall. I doubt that has anything to do with my virus chest issue though. *meanders off to Avasts forums*

How does it perform on a netbook? I've got an Asus EeePC 1005HA with Windows 7 Home Premium.

If it can run on a old 1 GHz AMD Athlon server with 1gig of ram it should have no problem on a netbook. =)

It's running great on both an ASUS and an MSI netbook here.

Since installing Avast 5 this morning I have had numerous problems.

I don't know if all the problems are related to this installation or not, but it's one heck of a coincidence if not.

    Problems since the installation.

    1. System tray icons disappeared and would not return despite numerous reboots.
    2. Windows is now very slow starting up. Not so before.
    3. Programs have been given permission to start up with Windows that have never had permission before.
    4. ZA Pro did a scan that was not scheduled and found two odd ball security threats. ZA Pro has never found anything up til now.
    5. Instances of more than 100 processes running in the task manager that I've never seen before.
    6. Some times all icons are in the system tray after a reboot and some times they're not all showing, even after going back to another snap shot using FD-ISR.

As I said, these problems might not all be related to the installation of Avast 5, but I think some may be.

All in all, I wish I had never installed it.

I will be sticking with Avast Home 4.8 for now.

    Thanks.
