Avast 5 RELEASED

That makes perfect sense. Still I wonder what would happen if a 4.8 user clicked the Program Update button...

 

I remember that it was mentioned that Pro license holders of version 4.X MIGHT get a discounted upgrade price to get the Security Suite. Anyone word on that?

 

I've flawlessly updated 1 PC with avast! 4.8 Professional to 5. Yet to try with Home/Free.

If you are using a 4.8 product (home or professional editions), the update is pretty painless. Sometime in the near future, the 4.8 product will tell you version 5.0 is available.

 

Good Evening ! Currently using Avast Internet Security. So far I'm how does the British expression go...Gob Smacked with Capital I...Impressed. Maybe I'm imagining but my system is responding quicker, time will tell, but the set up was a proverbial breeze, and everything about the product is user friendly. The only area where I'm in the fog, is the sandbox component. It has no component within the Gui that points the way to the feature. If it does, provide me with info that I can use to access the feature,it would be greatly appreciated. The firewall is graphically enhanced too provide ease of use. Regarding the sandbox feature Avast has it's logo that you click on and it has two icons that state run in or outside of sandbox and run virtualized,but these aren't included within the Gui and I suspect in puttering around the info supplied with the suite it might provide me with the proper guidance. Anyhow it's an amazing piece of engineering, kudos to everyone at Alwil, much to be proud of ! Sincerely....Securon

 

So the install of the suite leaves Windows firewall active. I remember VLK stating to leave the Win FW on but, that was during the beta. I just asssumed that some of the FW rules were not complete. Is anyone currently running both FW's on the final release?

 

So one of the features I was most excited in the new version of avast as the support of a sandbox in 64bit window's. This is available only in the Pro and internet security version. So I installed the 30 day trial in VMware and threw some malware at it to see how the sandbox held up.

Wtf is up with people lately going to wannabemalwaretester(dot)com picking some random malware farmed websites then sticking a post about this is how good the product is. Do these tests really have any use other then 5 min of wasting your time watching a video.

 

Assuming you watched the video, it should have wasted 8 minutes of your time. The video was made to test out Avast's new sandbox feature. I was looking online for a video testing out the new avast sandbox. Upon not finding one I decided to make my own.

 

Well if it's to show how a new feature works then I'm ok with it.

Is Avast 5 compatible with Zone alarm firewall? 4.8 had issues

 

Unable to perform a context-menu(right-click)scan. No scan windows is visible. Also, Windows Media Player started behaving erratically after the install.

 

Although free version lacks a script shield, it still has script execution protection in the file shield, see pic

 

I think you need to restart ur system for right-click context scan to work.

 

Same thing here.I discovered too that needs a reboot.IMO it's a bug for sure.Doesn't seem normally after install not be able to use right click scan....

 

With the beta, you didn't need to reboot, you just needed to log out of your account and log back in. Dunno if that works for the final as well.

The sandbox by default is configured to allow the user to save files outside the protection. So of course if you click 'run' you'll execute some live malware (if not detected by signature).

If you save, it is not sandboxed, but if something starts running, without being saved, i guess it should be running in the sandbox. What am i missing here?

 

juat had a crash dump when I went to the NY Times, it was working so well last night lets see if that perhaps was just a blip on the screen or a bad link...

Maybe an "anti Avast! sandbox" already have been created by the bad guys.

 

Before anyone gets carried away, the software is designed to work with its other components. I understand the motive behind the testing though, to see how the one layer works - but that one layer isn't a separate program, it's part of the suite.

The problem with testing, (besides who on earth downloads several malicious samples all at once, I'd love to meet this person!), the audience walks away seeing several objects found, without analysing the data found. Some may be redundant registry keys, software that can't execute and so on.

Regarding vlk's post on his forum, I echo the same sentiments. MBAM is a great program, but to be fair, when re-scanning for left overs, other products should be used such as a-squared, CureIt, kaspersky, AND to be a fair test the products should be reversed. Kaspersky/MBAM (or whatever) used against the primary infections, avast etc used as the back-up.

I'm a big fan of MBAM, I'll keep singing their praises, but many are walking away thinking it (MBAM) is the only worthwhile cleanup tool. When the reality is, several programs, including the very one being analysed/criticized, might be an excellent tool for cleaning-up infections missed by another program. Eg. if more people started using avast as the secondary scanner in youtube tests, it may earn the reputation as 'a great clean-up tool'. Fact is, people are instead making just quick-tests. Try several (programs) and reverse these (A as primary B as secondary, and then B as primary, A as secondary) if you want to test more thoroughly.
