Well whatever the status of the BB is, I have to hand it to Alwil. This version of Avast is awesome. I tended to stay away from ver. 4 due to resource usage and the GUI, but this version is much improved. :thumb:

From what I can tell, I think 1-2 times per day. It checks every four(?) hours by default, but an update is not always available.

Not only have they redefined suites they have set the bar high for free antivirus companies wanting to compete. Avast, MSE, Panda, and Comodo all had huge releases of free antivirus products in the past 4 or 5 months, thats awesome. I don't know what effect it will have on the commercial vendors or if it will effect them much, especially not right away. But some of the littler companies got to be a little scared.

Fortunately, that's not true. avast! Free protects you from script malware as well. It's just that payable versions offer extra shield called Script Shield that's checking executed scripts on runtime. Otherwise Web Shield, Behavior Shield, Code Emulator and finally File System Shield keep track of all scripts.

Also there is NO toolbar included. It's just an non optin and non optout option.
You have to make a choice for either. And i think Chrome offer is better than any retarded toolbar out there. At least it's prefered by many (unlike toolbars that are hated by many), it's fast, secure and offers more and more features with each version.

as I said, any vendor who can incorporate a Sandbox into 64 and 32 bit OS, has reached about as close to total protection as you can get. Kaspersky is close but Avast may have beaten them, for now. That is why I complained to Prevx so much for abandoning the sandbox idea for SafeOnline. Had they actually done it, they would currently be untouchable. You will always need a AV, but coupled with a Sandbox cant be beat.It will happen more, it is the way it should be.

Well said :thumb: . I'm currently running avast! v5 Free without any problems. If all goes well with Free after about a month or two, I'll take the Professional version for a spin :) .

Larry, I had asked that question on the Avast forum, and the answer was yes you can use the 4.8 license for version 5. That was at least a month ago, but I don't think it will be changed.

Considering the performance of Avast on the latest AV Comparatives tests, Avast might just be no 1 overall. It has always run well on my computers.

I probably won't use it since I have so long on my KIS license, but who knows? I wish there would be a relatively inexpensive upgrade from the Pro to the IS. I have gotten spoiled using suites.

    Regards,
    Jerry

I give my KIS license to my brother when MSE came out and have been using Avast and MSE on separate computers every since. Not that I didnt like KIS but I liked the other two better

thanks Jerry & yea I like suites tho I have 2 good firewalls & I did buy the suite because I like to support VLK's hard work & it shows in the test results...I'm running it now on both machines I use & initial thoughts is I like it, time will see how well it does & I'm sure there will be some growing pains but I like what I see so far...

I've learned to watch for Google toolbar checked off in some app installation set ups. If you don't see it and uncheck it you'll get stuck with it. I'll look for the Chrome option when I install v5. Annoying isn't it.:p

For those who are having trouble or are just curious, you can download documentation files (PDF format) from here:

    http://www.avast.com/download-documentation

I know I certainly needed to take a look, as there have been so many changes (most noticeably the GUI) that it's like a whole new product! :D

IMO, any time you're doing a major upgrade like this one you should do a clean uninstall/install.;)
