Does 42 min. sound reasonable or is this to long to backup 31.4 gb of c-drive?
    Thanks

    Yes, That's pretty slow.

Is that the estimated time? Usually it is very cautious and overestimates the time - a few minutes in it will drop considerably.

Speed depends on a number of things , including the speed of your machine, the compression level you chose, and the amount of free unfragmented space on the target drive.

Capacity is 293.39 gb and free space is 253.87 on c-drive. what else can i do to make the backups faster

Where are you backing this up to? If it's to the same drive, that's acceptable speed. I find it the quickest if you backup from one physical hard drive to another. Internal to USB external takes 1-2 minutes per 1GB.

In an extreme case, we've seen someone with two network cards, raid 5, backing up to a through a gigabit NAS getting speeds of 2-3GB per minute.

Then that's a reasonable time for 31.4GB. USB 2.0 is 1-2min per GB.
