For those interested: here's a copy and paste from (the relevant part of) an email from Grisoft, announcing AVG Free edition will be available for all, regardless where they reside:

Nice news for many (non-UK) European interested ones, looking for a freeware anti-virus  ;).

    regards.

Good news. :) Maybe they made it because the german edition of AVG is now sold under a different brand name (Databecker Anti Virus).

Any news about the free version for non-UK European users? The website still doesn't mention it...

    Hi Paul!

Functionates AVG in conjunction with Windows XP? o_O

    Quote of Grisoft:

AVG Anti-Virus System is designed for MS Operating Systems - it works under MS DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000.

    Ciao,

I've just installed it on my machine (XPhome), no problem. I didn't give it many permissions though - I'm just going to use it as a back up secondary scanner. Norton is my main always on jobbie.
