I need a good rescue cd with good detection, one that can find possible rootkits, trojans and other malware, what would be the best one to use?

I like Avira's rescue CD personally.

You should check out SARDU (Shardanna Antivirus Rescue Disk Utility) It will integrate several recue disks on one CD or DVD.

    Antivirus:

    # Avira AntiVir Rescue System
    # BitDefender
    # Dr.Web LiveCD
    # F-Secure
    # GDATA
    # Kaspersky ‘Kav Rescue CD’
    # Panda Safe Cd

    Utility:

    # Floppy win98SE
    # Gparted
    # NT password
    # Parted Magic
    # System Rescue CD
    # Ultimate Boot CD

    Linux:

    # Austrumi
    # Damn Small Linux
    # Puppy Linux
    # Slax

    Windows PE:

    # LiveXP
    # MegalabCD
    # WindowsPE
    # UBCD4WIN
    # VistaPE

Download the program and then all u have to do is click on the icon for whichever rescue iso image u want to download and it will download it for you and put whichever ones you want on a single disk.

You have to enter Norton's product key to use their recovery Disk, so if you don't own a license for their product, or if your key is stored on your computer, you're out of luck.

Over the years have tried various bootable AV CDs and found them to be quite ineffective in cleaning infested systems. Best method I've found, slave the infected hard drive to a healthy system with a fully updated OS with multiple cleaning tools. I commonly use an external USB drive adapter for this...connect drives from laptops, desktops, be they PATA or SATA.

Correct. The Norton Bootable Recovery Tool disc is intended as a supplement to Norton AntiVirus or Norton Internet Security, and assumes that you have an active subscription. After you enter your product key (which should be printed and saved together with the CD disc), the current anti-virus definitions are downloaded and the scan proceeds.

Eset has also a nice one, with the unique ability to also create a Rescue USB instead of CD.

Thanks for all the replies, I've found Avira's to work good so far, I'm not really interested in cleaning as much as detection, for most things I do slave the drive under a clean PC and go from there, but thats not always an option.

I have only used AVIRA on my four home PC's. AVIRA is the only one of the Rescue CD's I tried that had full hardware support for all four of my PC's. It seems like each of the other Rescue CD's had a hardware issue of some sort on at least one of my PC's.

Hi I just installed DR Web LiveCD, can anyone tell me whether I can access my other windows files by booting from this CD? Can I copy and save files to other locations when booting from LiveCD?

    Thanks
