I am assuming you were surprised that you plugged an external 3.5 hdd to your laptop and it worked without you having to connect an external power supply to the hard disk?

Well, I am surprised too as most 3.5 external drives need a separate power supply and can not operate on the power supplied by the PC's usb port alone.

no i was surprised that it worked. because they sell 2.5 hdd and 3.5 hdds so i thought 2.5 only works with laptop and 3.5 only works with desktop

    hello 2007,

Only applies to installed internal drives.

I recycle my replaced internal desktop 3.5 drives as external backup drives for both my laptop and desktop. I will do the same
    when I replace my laptop's 2.5 drives.
