Free SoftMaker Office for Linux

Here's a free download of SoftMaker Office which is now also available in the Linux version. This has been posted before, but up until now it was only the Windows version.

There's a choice of .rpm, .deb or a .tgz file. If you want you can download all of them (the Windows version as well).

For each download they contribute .10 € to charity.

SoftMaker is worth trying out. In my experience it has better compatibility with MS Office files than OO. Some tests done by heise online came to the conclusion that it handles some Word docs better than Word itself

 

Interesting. How does it compare to OpenOffice?

 

I think it's a lot better than OpenOffice. It starts in about one-tenth the time OO needs to start up and it handles MS office files better (doesn't screw up the formatting like OO does at times). It's also pretty small and you can put it on a USB stick. The one thing it's missing is an equivalent to Access, but I personally don't have any need for that.

 

Thank you, it looks pretty good so far! Access doesn't matter to me either.

 

I have used it for a short while and I really like it. I have taken MS Office (sample version) off my laptop, have uninstalled MS Works, and I will be taking Excel and Word off my desktops.

I have used OpenOffice but I like SoftMaker much, much more. Its easier to use and more compatible with MS Office. I use only Textmaker and Planmaker. I really like that developing simple algorithms is about the same as Excel.

I may upgrade to The 2010 version if they'll let me pay the $49 upgrade for three licenses.

 

i guess there is no 64 bit version ??
