Great timing for me, as I was already running the trial version, but no matter, I would have gladly paid the full price for this great program anyway.

A big thank you to the members of Wilders, I would never have installed and bought Shadow Defender, or Sandboxie (1yr ago), if it hadn't of been for the glowing recommendations given by the good people here.

Not an A vs B question! What are its features that differentiate it from Sanboxie? I have no 64 bit systems! Thank You!

 

It protects or virtualizes your entire computer. You can exclude specific folder or files so that things downloaded or created are kept on reboot. Everything else gets restored back to whn you installed SD.

Go to the site and read about it it,download the trial. It has demonstrated its ability to stand up to some of the worst malware out there.

 

This might be a little too casual, but think of Sandboxie as functioning on an application level while Shadow Defender operates on a partition level.

As far as I understand it; Apart from Exclusions etc or files that you "commit" before you leave Shadow Mode, on re-boot your system returns to the state it was in prior to entering shadow mode not to the state of your original installation of Shadow Defender.

 

Actually an excellent analogy and I thank you! If pricing was like Sandboxie (more than one PC for home use) I'd purchase this, unfortunately it is a one PC license.

Well sorry for being out of topic (i.e. discount) but I think that the only thing missing to make it perfect is the ability to retain the shadow mode state after reboot, like shadowuser.

To explain myself better, suppose I enter shadow mode, install an antivirus to test it, when I reboot I would like the shadow mode to be continued from previous shadow mode state.

Don't know if this is possible though.

 

Well for someone like you having FD ISR it isn't a problem, I suppose. I have ShadowUser on one machine still going well after almost 5 years, but I have used the persistent mode (the ability to continue the shadow session on reboot without losing any data) only 3 times. Even though it looks impressive it isn't a great deal after all, because most of the time trialling an application should be done at best for 30 days, and that is too long to stay on a shadow session IMO. A backup image or something like FD ISR, RollbackRx are probably preferable for quick uninstalls.

 

Osaban, you are right, for long term testing of software FD-ISR is the best. I just requested this feature, as sometimes I could avoid lengthy copying of snap shots and because as I saw it, it was missing from the features.

 

Sorry for being OT but, I’m trying to find out the best way to use SD. What folders do SD users typically exclude? I find myself excluding too many folders in the end. The majority of the programs I use save their setting to C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\ and I would assume that it wouldn’t be safe to exclude the entire Roaming folder.

 

I exclude firefox history & bookmarks. If you use an AV you have to find its folders and exclude them, specifically the updates. Then you can create a custom folder, where you will create some backups, i.e. export Malware Defender's rules, or adblock's filters (the file patterns.ini). You can use this folder to save some new docs, like word docs or pdfs or txt files, images etc.

All other files/folders can be excluded via right click when necessary.

Thats how I use it.
