    Hi all,

I need a static IP address for some reasons (trust me on this), but I won't use it all the time, and while it should not be slow as hell (tor...), I don't need a lot of bandwidth either. Getting it from an ISP just seems overkill.

Do you know any paid service that provide this?

You need an IP address from the pool of IPs that your ISP has. They have dynamic pools for the regular home grade accounts, and static pools for their static and business grade accounts. This is governed by their DHCP services, thus no 3rd party would be able to access this information.

You can use dynamic DNS services such as dyndns.org
Which will keep a fairly up to date DNS alias bound to your dynamic IP, if this fits your needs. Many of these services are free. So you can tie "etrange.homeip.net" to your IP address...and when it changes...in short time that alias will point to your new IP address.

Thanks, I already have a dyndns account, but in this case I definitely need a static IP address and not something else. I also don't want to give up my current Internet plan (with a dynamic IP), since this particular need is pretty occasional.

If I go to my ISP, they're gonna charge me for a full-fledged business account, even though I would just use it a few hours a week.

Edit: I don't want to host anything on my PC.

you can't have two IPs, ie a dynamic or static IP from your ISP and another one from anywhere else, doesn't make sense. If that was possible imagine the mess on the Internet. Adding again that your IP is granted to you by your ISP, how do imagine getting another one from a service who's not responsible for your connection in the first place. Only workaround are proxies, and since you're not interested, you're gonna have to stick to your current ISP IPs I'm afraid, like we all do ;)

Never said I was not interested in proxies; that's what I had in mind, actually.
But I don't know if there is a private proxy service that lets you have a static IP.

found this but that's not free, and you already said you got an account on dyndns so...
    http://www.easydns.com/dynamicdns.php3

ps: adding, don't know why I suggested a proxy  since free proxies are not there to provide an IP, but to hide yours temporarily with theirs....and they won't offer you the ability to be contacted through their IPs.

Dynamic DNS provides you with a DNS name even when you don't have a static IP; this is not what I am looking for.

A proxy can fulfill several purposes, anonymity is a popular goal but not the only one.

Edit: I am naturally ready to pay for this, let's say $50/month max.

You can get exclusive private proxies from PacketFlip.com for $10 a month, they are fast and reliable plus your IP never changes (unless you want it to) from month to month.

The other way is get a cheap $10 VPS with 128mb RAM and tunnel through that. A little setting up to get started, there's plenty of guides but after that it's simple.

Thanks, that's more like what I need. I just registered to strongVPN to test it, if it is no good I'll ask the refund and I might look into the VPS solution (was a UNIX sysadmin in another life so I should be able to make it).
