Let's all gather pitch forks and torches then and burn Avira to the ground! Those bast...s! They must be evil since it is written on the internet!

Really? How do you disable Aviras nag screen without buying their software?

What does what you wrote have to do with what I wrote?

There is ad-ware, and crap-ware, and malware, & rogue-ware {& under-wear  }. Antivir-free is ad-ware, which is most definitely not the same as rogue-ware.

If some ladee wishes to categorize all ad-ware as "rogue", then she might just as well categorize commercial newspapers as rogues (they run ads), & commercial TV stations as rogues (they run ads, too).

Anyhoo -- try read dis ting over dere. No problem, seestah.

IMHO this has completely destroyed his credibility as an 'expert'. How could he not recognise such an obvious description of a rogue?

Below are the installers I've managed to grab so far for the ROGUE ANTIVIR which has nothing to do with that fine AV Avira!

With all due respect there's a whole world of difference between a rogue AV (with no real detection ability) popping up every 5 minutes asking for payment and Avira (top tier detection) advertising it's premium edition once daily upon updating.

How do you disable some uncomfortable nags out the 100 million using it? Simple, don't use it. There is a very strange phenomenon on the internet based on the fact that something is free, and has to abide by a whole bunch of creditors who without forking out a penny they pass judgement on it.

There are many alternatives to Avira, if one thinks it isn't good enough.

I know...as I read through this thread, I crack up at how many people missed the facts.

There is indeed a rogue/fake alert variant out there which is called AntiVir. Yes...those rogue guys named it after Aviras AntiVir.

And the rogue/fake alert AntiVir does cause tons of popups...so yes it is unscrupulous malware.

It's fooling a lot of people. Luckily those with a little bit of IT experience will see the rogue AntiVir has the typical rogue/fake alert shield icon that mimics the Windows Security Center, instead of the real AntiVirs red umbrella.

Luckily this rogue AntiVir is wicked easy to cleanup, unlike some of the more nasty rogue variants. I've cleaned several PCs over the past 2 weeks that got infected by it, slips past NOD32, but MSE picks it up in a jiffy and cleans it up nicely. As well as MalwareBytes.

Give Google a shot..it's actually very easy, takes a whopping 10 seconds to kill the nag.

Actually this example highlights what could become a worrying trend in rogue AVs.What's to stop them not only copying the name but also the GUI of a trusted product? This would make spotting the good from bad extremely difficult for all but the more experienced users.:doubt:

Actually BleepingComputer provide a link to MBAM, that will scan for and delete the fake av without any payment.

Maybe you shouldn't. It's part of the FREE VERSION.
The PAID VERSION doesn't have the nag screen, has better updates, and perhaps other benefits.

Distributing and maintaining a good AV is costly, using a registry hack to circumvent this seems unfair.

"UPDATE: Thanks to all of you who posted in defense of Avira. I still say MSE is a far better product, but the main point is that I got duped! The fellow who wrote to me is apparently the victim of a piece of crapware that’s using Avira’s name to legitimize itself. Details on the BleepingComputer site. I’ll stick with MSE, but the rogue program is the problem here, not Avira."

This statement disturbs me as much as his original statement declaring Antivir was no good.
Woody is the author of several books, writes for Windows Secrets and is a MS MVP.
I'm amazed that someone that smart would take the word of one person and then declare Avira a roque.
This now calls into question the validity of what I read on the Window Secrets site since Woody seems to be highly regarded there.
Shame to waste all that inteligence on negativity.

Intelligent? Maybe. Wise? I doubt it.

"Intelligence" is knowing stuff. Wisdom is making right choices. (E.g --- Hitler had intelligence; Churchill had wisdom. My 2 pesos)
