    Hello,
I just found this article discussing what features ubuntu 10.04 will be like.

what does everyone think about removing synaptec, gdebi and update manager?

Im not sure ubuntu software is right for the job. 9.10 version of software centre is only very basic. Is it really a good idea to replace such major componants at such as early stage of a new software? Plus i think its to much change for An LTS. I wonder if there will be an option to install synaptec or will it be software centre or commandline?

I do think having two GUI package managers is stupid so do like the idea of more intergration so software centre taking care of everything is good. I just hope it has the features for both standard user and power user.

I was a ubuntu user before, really liked it, but i have chosen to change... I understand they are focusing on new linux converts and newbies, several things have been dumbed down and removed (gimp) in order to make it the perfect switch-to-instead-of-windows distro.

And they giving us applications we don't need (this is my opinion, please don't take it as anything else) there is a redundancy always when talking ubuntu development. Instead of doing something to fix existing problems they rebuild the wheel. Synaptic is working fabolous, just focus on more important aspects! And why can't you provide us with an acceptable KDE experience while you at it?

I do not like this direction at all.

The same happened to MS with Vista/Windows 7, a new "look" for the sake of looks, and it does not look good at all. Personal taste, but so it is.

Ubuntu will make a mistake by trying to become a new Windows, because people do not need a new Windows, they already have one that works. It has to be something else. Maybe the masses will swallow down the transparency as the next best thing as the cure for cancer or something.

USC, as long as it works as expected, well ... but removing synaptic and such for the sake of another new thing you need to relearn every six months. I guess this is starting to annoy me seriously.

Then, you get grub beta, upstart scripts, no inittab, no runlevels, it's taking the matt from under the linux user's feet and yanking it away. Maybe this is what ought to be and this is what Mac did ... but then, there's no need for another Mac, either.

If it works, the good thing will be that you get more programs and games for linux, but the OS itself (Ubuntu) will become an unremarkable clone. I prefer they solve pulseaudio problems and let me enjoy graphics cards drivers on my old machines than introduce new useless stuff every third day.

I see for new users removing the multiple ways of installing software is a benefit. It was one of the most talked about problems in that people didn't know where to look. I cannot really comment on that since I turn off all the update programs and do it by hand or cronjob. It looks pretty, hurray, I just hope they don't make transparency default and keep the fluff to a minimum.

Oh and maybe they can get the fix for the suspend bug that is annoying the crap out of notebook/laptop users in this 9.10 release. This is a new user killer, my girlfriend knows to push the power button but likes to remind me that I should fix it. :)

I dont see why ubuntu cant be easy to use and a decent distro while keeping the standard linux stuff under the hood for users to edit if they wish.
I feel that fedora is doing a better job of keeping a Distro that is both easy for a novice to use and is possible to tweak as much as a power user wants to. I cant wait until Centos 6 comes out.

    I Hope Debian stays Debian.

I couldn't agree more. As much as I like Vista's transparency, it's not my primary concern.
And why in the world replace Synaptic? It's one of the great things about Ubuntu. It allows multiple downloads, tells you upfront what's already installed, what versions, etc. Software Center (already sounds Windowish) only downloads one thing at a time, makes you click that arrow to see if the choice is already installed, and generally just looks prettier. Why in the world change something that works well??
Not a good direction, in my opinion.
I can get my Linux eye candy with Cairo-Dock and multiple other sources.

And they have to pay $200 for it. If Ubuntu could become Windows, and free, it could be one of the best things to happen to Linux as far as market adoption is concerned.

I have no problem with new themes as long as I can have normal ones.

But, before themes, stability and support. Otherwise, it's just a silly game of seeing what breaks in the next 6 months. Once Ubuntu can offer 10 year domestic support like MS do and offer flawless updates, without nasty surprises or total overhauls - XP SP1-SP3, no visual changes or major functionality changes, then we can talk eye-candy. But 9.04 uses Synaptic + Add Remove, 9.10 uses Synapic + SC, 10.04 no Synaptic + USC, what next? Does this sound logical? A new package manager every 6 months?

What`s wrong with having a software centre for new users and Windows migrators and keeping Synaptic an Gdebi for those users who want them? Why replace them?

Will the new software centre offer the functionality of Synaptic? What if I want to install a .deb? Will I have to use the command line or will the software centre handle debs like GDebi?

I don`t think Gimp should be dropped from default install either.
