I need free or inexpensive server AV

I am in need of a free or very low cost AV for a Windows server 2008 box and a few server 2003 boxes. I do not need any argument over what is best, just the names of something free or cheap. Thanks.

 

I have no experience with Server AV's. Here are a couple of names. I am sure that there are others.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Windows Servers Enterprise Edition
F-Secure® Anti-Virus™ for Windows Servers

I have heard that ClamAV works and it is Free.

 

Thanks for the reply. Kaspersky is a little out of the budget, and I couldn't even find pricing on F-Secure, just reseller info, but I expect it is out of the budget also. ClamAV is a last resort as it is on demand only. AVG is currently installed, but the price has doubled since the last renewal.

Looks good but it doesn't say anything on their site about Server 2008 or x64 support. I have 1 machine that is 2008 x64. The rest of them would be fine. Does anyone know if it would work?

 

f-prot or vipre.
both are very cheap.
i didnt find f-prot reliable thou. the guard kept on crashing.

I'm currently using a squared antimalware 4.5 (the paid version) on Win2008. I guess the free version should work also.

Confirmed- A2 free does work on Win 2008.

 

PCTools has a free version which is supported on Windows Server.

I can't remember if BitDefenders free version is supported on Windows Server...take a look.

 

Try VBA32. It supports 2003 & 2008. Plus until Jan 12,2010 if you buy 1 yr license you get 2 years extra free !!

Each license is for single user still it would work out the cheapest, I think.

 

Don't know if offer is valid for Vba32.S server edition (good deal if it is). May need to check with sales-en@anti-virus.by.

 

VBA32 Personal works on Win 2003 & 2008.
And from the products page, it seems they have only 2 products VBA32 personal and VBA for mail server. So VBA32 personal seems to be one-stop product for Win2000 to Win2008

 

Also may want to look at Avast Standard Suite.
$41.95 for 10 users, that's less than $5 for each PC !!

It includes Avast Pro, Avast Server and Avast ADNM.

 

Unfortunately, you have misinterpreted Avast's pricing. The actual pricing is $41.95 per workstation license when you purchase 10 or more licenses.

 

Don't know about 2008 compatibility but Rising Antivirus 2009 is USD19.95 per year for single user, and cheaper per user for more.

As for PC Tools AV, it may install (I've never tried) but I've got a feeling it can't cope with multiple users, or indeed no user login (i.e. server situation normal).

 

I'm running ClamAV and Windows Defender on a MS 2003 Server. ClamAV is on demand scanning only and set to do a full scan every evening around midnight. Windows Defender is resident and does a quick scan every morning around 4-AM. This combo works well.

**I fully realize that Windows Defender is not an AV. It compliments the full security setup. This is mostly a billing office. As all work stations have strong up-to-date MSE and Immunet AV I am not concerned about putting something stronger on the server.

 

fortigate makes a antivirus for servers, and I think that there is a version free too. I prefer the clamav and windows defender route myself for a 2003 server. I have had only trouble with realtime av on servers...

I use Eset Smart Security Business Edition on my Windows 2008 Server Standard, which I have running at home. It works fine, no problems at all.

 

I am in the second day of testing Vipre and so far it is looking good. If it hasn't caused any problems by the end of the week then they will probably be making a sale. Thanks for all of the suggestions. I have learned about a lot of products I don't know were usable on a server.

 

While brushing the topic of licensing...MSE is only licensed for home use...not business.

 

There are guides to follow, even from Microsoft, about proper exclusions being done when installing an antivirus on servers. You do not treat this install like a standard workstation install..there is a long list of exclusions regardless of which brand AV you install.
Various active directory folders...
Various infrastructure folders..
Database folders..if any
...the list goes on.

 

It also will not install on a server.

 

You can also try AppGuard.
I use it on my server PC .
It's only $24.95.

Not sure if it is 64-bit compatible though.
