I installed Avira Premium Security Suite. I want to test the features (firewall, etc).

I cannot use any online firewall testing services because my computer is connected to a router (D-Link DSL-2640T with built-in modem, 4 ports switch and Wireless Access Point) which has built-in firewall. If I use any online firewall testing services provided by any website, it will test my modem's firewall instead of testing my computer's firewall.

I share the same internet connection with my family members. I cannot switch my modem to bridge mode because it will cause other users cannot surf the internet.

So, I am looking for a software, either open source free software or proprietary freeware to help me test my computer's security risk. Budgets very limited.

    So, anyone have any suggestion?

Why are you bumping this ?

Frankly testing the firewall security (Inbound) behind the router, It's just pointless all your doing is asking for trouble. Tho if its a laptop and you want to test it when you connect to other Wifi spots. It's simple go to a Hotspot in your town connect then run the tests or even just plug your self strait into the modem when no one is using it. DMZ would have the same effect if you want to put yourself outside of the router. Lots off diffrent options. But again if this is just a desktop behind a router there is really no point.

If its OUTBOUND you are wanting to test, well that you can do behind a router or not.

I bumped to get attention to the post, but since we're all behind routers I guess there is no need to worry about security right lol But, seriously, I know of a couple of apps that he could check into...I just couldn't think of the name.

    Hello cshong87, welcome to Wilders.

As already suggested above, you can put your LAN IP in a DMZ and check with online scans from there.

There's Zenmap, a frontend GUI for nmap. It is free AND opensource. Much better and comperehensive than any online scan. Very easy to use too.

Are you implying that online scans are dangerous? I wonder why you say this...

How did you get that out of my Post ? If your behind a router its pointless to worry about testing your security the Nat and the Firewall pretty much make Inbound protected. Not to mention now most computers at least have the Windows firewall enabled by default. Asking for trouble simply meant messing with your configuration you could open something up that you did not plan to (not talking about advance users).

Well, you said that performing an inbound test is asking for trouble, but OK, I obviously misinterpreted you - I did not take the 'shoot-yourself-in-the-foot' scenario into account.

Whether it's pointless or not is debatable and would depend on the quality of a packet filter in a router. So, it is good to check your router for inbound too.
NAT, except stoping unsolicited inbound, gives no other protection (does not protect active connections against bad packets i.e.).

Yes, talking about home-grade routers, Windows Firewall is one of rare firewalls that will actually add to router inbound protection/filtering. Unlike most.

    I really appreciate all replies.

I know that it is difficult to find such software. So, I try to ask in this forum.

    Thanks for all replies.
