GwenView ReView - The Linux killer application?

Here's one for you: does Linux have a killer app?

Could GwenView be that killer app? I've written a review of GwenView, a KDE-based, elegant, powerful, multi-featured image viewer for Linux. So you tell me what you think.

Just my personal take, but no "image viewer," no matter how good, could possibly qualify as a "killer app." Just how much time does anyone spend viewing images? Hmm Maybe for porn addicts? And just how much better is this one compared to the multitude of image viewers already available?

About the only feature I can think of that isn't available in any image viewer I've seen is an easy way to adjust contrast and brightness as you page through images.

Come up with a compiler that will compile VB6 source to run in Linux and you'll have a real killer app!!!

 

Well, since I have to prepare 20-50 images per article for the website, working with image viewers/image processing apps is a major part of my computing experience, so I definitely need them to be fast, useful, productive.

Considering that I have 5,000-6,000 tutorial screenshots strewn about, this is quite important, including minimalistic tweaks like shadows, effect, etc.

Oh, I'm an addict too ...

Witch program did you previously use for these tasks under Ubuntu?

 

Well, GIMP mainly, but it's too slow.
I also use IrfanView quite a bit as I work on Windows, as well ...

Don't have a web site, not an addict, and have all of 20 photos of my niece and Yankee Stadium on my computer. However, I like gthumb for Ubuntu. Fast with some simple editing tools. I had gwenview under kde, but did not use it enough to make a comparison.

 

Yeah, but Mrk, you are a superuser! I thought, by definition, the "killer app" that some pundits claim is missing in Linux is the one that would convince the MS "masses" to switch to Linux.

And I'm not addicted. I can quit any time I want!

 

Hmm?? Are we talking image "viewers" here or "editors?" I do know a lot of people claim that Photoshop keeps them in the Windows camp.

 

Both, for example IrfanView is a viewer, but it can do quick hacks like rotate, crop, some effects, etc, same with GwenView. When I need serious work, I use GIMP. Quick & dirty, work on images, don't waste time, that style of thing ...

Wouldn't gThumb compare better with GwenView? Did you already try Krita for editing?

 

Would have to work with those to see ...

I like GwenView, comes up a default view in KDE4 and I am likeing it. It's a real nice basic viewer.

Mrk, do you use anything for organizing your vast collection of images?

 

Well, logically named folders ... Works fine so far.

LOL. Fancy that, we use the same system. I have tried a few "picture organizers", none of them excited me.

 

How would you put it against digikam? I know you have made a review before of digikam. I just wonder since its both fast and powerful for viewing and editing pictures, think you get two programs with the install (digikam and showphoto).

I've got a couple thousand Fx bookmarks, all placed in logically named folders. No tagging here either.

 

I've been using Gwenview for a long time on KDE and it is indeed a wonderful image viewer.
