    Hi,

I tried Paragon Backup & Restore 10 Free on a Vista Home PC : backup works fine, but I can't mount the archive of the C: (system) partition. The archive is on an external USB Drive.

I have tried several times, and also rebooted more than once, just to be sure.

Is this by chance a known problem ?

    Thanks.

    Hi Merleone,

It may be other virtual drives interefering with the process.

You could look in Device Manager>View>Show Hidden Devices and see if you have other devices in there that may conflict.

You could also see if The Universal Image Mounter is there.

Since it is a new program, it might also be an issue with your system/ configuration. Are you using Vista x64 or x86?

Fortunately, mounting is not necessary to access the contents of an image with Paragon.

It can be done with the Volume Explorer. Dble click the arc, the .PBF, then the partition. Rt click and Export to copy individual files out.

It can also be done with the FTW. Tools>File Transfer Wizard.

    Hope it helps.

Thanks for the tip. I'll check and see what happens.

Regarding exploring the image within Paragon, I have looked but not found how to do it. Will look again...

Volume Explorer might not be in the free one.

File Transfer Wizard is definitely there. It's in the left pane on the Tools Menu. Select Transfer Files.

Browse to the Backup image. Click ( or dble click ) the arc , then the PBF - see picture bottom left here:

    Hope it helps.

mount archive doesn't seem to work in the free one, on win 7 64 bit.

It says "Mount/Unmount the archive" on the product page

May be a bug in that for 7 x64 mounting.

You can use the File Transfer wizard to extract files from backup image.

I have found the FTW, so it's a workaround. Still, I have less confidence in a tool that gives error messages for no visible reason. If the feature is not to be present, the error message should say so.

About the Universal Image Mounter, you mean it should be visible in the Device list (hidden or not) ?

    Thanks.

It's not a workaround. That is the way Paragon have always accessed files from images.

The Mount function was an extra they added this time. Not working properly yet, it seems on x64, though that may only be with some systems. I am sure they will address that.

Yes, UIM should be in the Device List. It may that is not installing properly - hence no mounting on your x64 system.

TBH - they may be better removing it - it's not necessary.

I don't have the Free version - you might see if you can restore files this way with the Free one:

Please let me know if you can - Would be interesting to find out.

    SIW2, actually I don't have a x64 system, just a Vista Home Premium, which is not x64 I think.

For the moment I have uninstalled PB&R 10, I'll check UIM if I do another trial.

    Thanks for your answers.

My guess is there will be another build of B&R 10 soon, as is often the case with new programs.

I'd like to confirm this issue

My Windows XP Professional (32-bit) and Windows 7 Ultimate x64 both had the same problem.

    Here's the exact error message:
    Code:
    Operation Failed

    Error Source: Universal Image Monitor
    Error Code: 0xe0000010
    I've also seen:
    Code:
    Operation Failed

    Error Source: Universal Image Monitor
    Error Code: 0xe0000020
I uninstalled Virtual Clone Drive from the XP computer (installed on the other as well) and now I can mount images, but they cannot be accessed via Explorer. I'd get an I/O device error, cannot read from disk or something similar. That message went away after a reboot, but now Explorer just hangs when I try to access the image. It never opens and I have end process explorer to get my system working right again.

I have tried removing anything from the 7 machine yet, but that is the only 'image' software I have installed on the XP computer. Still isn't working, although the behavior changed.

Edit: Also, I think it is worth mentioning that while the image mounter is absolute failure, if you right click on your archive under the 'Archives' tab and choose "Restore File From Archive"... it seems to work. Alternatively, you can use the "Archives" menu at the top to access the "Restore File From Archive" option.

I hope this gets fixed soon, because image mounting is teh awesum feecher that every decent backup program should have.

Thanks for the confirmation. What surprises me is that Paragon, while offering something generous, is releasing a crippled software that will damage its brand.

    I have also noticed another annoying problem : when installing, several of my partitions suddenly disappear, that is drive letters disappear. Before install, I have C,D, E, F, G, H, I, J, P, Q, R drives, after I get C, D, E, F, G, I, Q, R.

This really gives a bad feeling about the whole thing.

    Hi RudeIota,

The mounting does seem to be a problem for some systems.

I am sure Paragon are aware of this and are on the case.

Restore file from archive works perfectly, so there is no problem getting individual files back.

    Hello Merleone,

Do you see those partitions in Windows Disk Management, - is it just Paragon that doesn't show them?

    Are they on different HD's?

Would you be good enough to post a screenshot of Disk Management window, and Paragon main window.

    Thanks

    Misery loves company.

No mounting abilities at all under Windows 7 X64.
    Can't locate UIM either.

Installed B&R under a vanilla W7 X64 VM and also no mounting abilities.

It seems there is a glitch with mounting in some x64 systems.

It appears UIM isn't always installing.

It's a new program , so glitches are not surprising.

I believe that is being addressed.

    Hope it helps

Here is the disk map capture. The Paragon & Windows disk map were identical, J and P where appearing as non recognized partition and it was impossible to attach a new drive letter to them.

    Thanks for posting that Merleone.

Nothing springs to mind as a result of seeing it.

I expect one of the PSG team will have a look.

Do you only get that with B&R10 - do your other Paragon apps. show the partitions fine ?

There might be something about the Disk Geometry of those two.

I may not have been totally clear : after I ran the installer, I noticed the missing partitions. They were missing at OS level, not only within Paragon B&R 10. Even in the DiskManagement console.

I have not rebooted, so maybe after reboot they should have reappeared, but I uninstalled it before.

I tried a second time, same result (before rebooting).

    Hi Merleone,

    Thanks for the info.

After installing B&R10, two partitions disappear.

Uninstalling B&R10 causes them to reappear?

Well, actually, I may have left aside a small detail which may be significant. I performed the installation in shadow mode (I use Shadow Defender=SD), protecting just C: and D:. I see no reason why SD should cause this, so I have omitted this so far.

When I reboot, SD puts c: and d: drives as they were before activating shadow mode, and the missing partitions also reappear, which means that they were not really damaged by the installation.

As of now, the mounting feature for BR10 in Windows 7 64bit is not working. We will keep you posted when this is fixed or removed.
