Thanks, but mailinator has never worked for me. I 've tried many times, my registrations were always "lost" (never appeared). I 've a spare "spam" email that i could use and get the license anyway (heck, i 've 5 email addresses), but i don't want it as a principle to "cheat them" into giving me one. I am not eligible? Fine. This means that now i 've to choose only between Avast Free and F-Secure free license that i got yesterday.

Does anyone know if you need to install the program right away and/or apply the license to the account immediately or can you still do this in a few weeks?

You can install it whenever you like, but your license starts counting 1 year from today. So, it's your call.

Banshee - look towards the bottom of the email. I overlooked it the first time too.

Fuzzfas - thanks for the info.

The license coupon expires after 3 months from registration date if not used.

All of this personal information in the Account is transacted without any Secure Socket Layer (SSL) connection.....https.....so I am through with Emsi Software, I will not be Installing.

Also, any vender that can not provide an Download Link DIRECTLY from their Web Site is an NO NO for me.....Emsi Software A-Squared Antimalware can only be Downloaded from CNET of which I do not trust.

At one time A-Squared Antimalware could be Downloaded directly from the Emsi Software Web Site just as Mamutu currently can.....so its over.

Here's a couple of alternative links from respected sources:

    Thanks for the information andyman35.....

The Emsi Software Web Site advertises A-Squared AntiMalware as v4.5.0.27

The Softpedia Web Site advertises A-Squared Antimalware as v4.5.0.63

The Major Geeks Web Site advertises A-Squared Antimalware as v4.5.0.63

So who am I to trust here? Does this mean that Affiliates have more updated information about the product than the vender themselves?

Besides, this does not resolve the issue in regards to secure transactions during the Installation of Emsi Software A-Squared Antimalware.
During Installation, one is required to Log into their Account that is not secured under https.

Even during the creation of the Account, there is no secure connection.....no security from an security vender.....is this an reflection of their Software?

One could argue that Emsi Software wants to know the same information as Wilders. Wilders don't offer SSL as far as I know and obviously you haven't had any issues typing in your data here. A case of double-standard?

My guess would be that their download servers are hosting updates and setup packages. To prevent an overload today they removed their direct download links. At least they were present yesterday (and I guess they will be present again tomorrow).

There were talks about using SSL encryption inside the updater (just look at their old forum: http://forum.emsisoft.com). Emsi Software said they won't add SSL there since they want the user to be able to sniff the connection to see what is transfered. All user credentials are submitted as hashes though. So there are no plain text passwords involved.

To verify downloaded files, just take a look in the file properties. There must be a Digital Signature tab showing up the 'VALID' signature stating that the file is from Emsi Software GmbH.

If the file has been altered by download.com or anyone else, the signature would be broken. It guarantees that the file is an original from us.

Also, it does not matter which build you download and install. Once running the online update, you'll automatically get the latest version. Also if you install version 3.0 and update to the latest 4.5.x. ;)

Regarding SSL: We don't see a need to switch to SSL as there is only the email address being sent. Similar to nearly all forums you need to type in your email address to logon.

The password it sent as hash code btw.

We decided to use plaintext protocols for our sever communication to let everyone see that we don't send any data that would break your privacy. Everyone can take a look what is being transferred.

Brand new is based on your mail address. You can always use a different mail address than before. Mailinator and Co. is your friend.

I certainly can see where you're coming from,on first impressions this may appear insecure but Emsi have a good reputation and I have a lot of trust in their credibility.

    Hello everyone,

I just installed A-squared as my stand alone antivirus. Unfortunately its on-execution scanner does not detect neither EICAR nor Trojan Simulator. I've read the posts in their forums and I find them quite dubious. I don't have any other security solution installed besides Online armor (and I closed it when I performed the tests). So it is really strange.
The other question I would like to ask is does the on-execution scanner use the Ikarus signatures?

    Regards

Same for me. Evidently I once had a free license for something from them, so this doesn't work for me.

    Not a problem.
    Regards,
    Jerry

Yes it does use the Ikarus. As far as the on-execution is concerned just set a scheduled scan weekly. I always set up a deep scan a week.

Thank you for your answer. It's OK with the scheduled scan but what does that have to do with the on-execution scan? I'm just trying to figure out if it is working OK, using the Ikarus signatures, so that I can confidently use A-squared as my only real-time antivirus. Because if (though not likely) I execute a malicious code, it will not wait for my weekly scan.

Perhaps this will help clarify the User Account confusion in regards to Ordering the Emsi Software Free Offer of A-Squared Antimalware.....

    ASAMF01.JPG
.....in other words Start an New User Account for this Order Only using an different Email Address if you are an existing customer,
or you have an existing Account with that Email Address.

Hello and thank you for your answer. I use Windows XP SP3. I see that it's working on your computer. Unfortunately I can't get it to work on mine. Tried several times - with Online Armor enabled, then disabled - the same result - Trojan Simulator installed successfully.

Thanks HKEY, yes, you 're right, i hadn't noticed that one. Anyway, i 'll pass. I could obtain 4 licenses with 4 difference emails (actually 5 if i count my university's mail address) if i wanted to , but i find all that a bit childish.

    - Fuzzfas with his current account = old customer, not qualified.
    - Fuzzfas with another email = becomes "new customer", qualified.

I find it meaningless, unless one collects email addresses, so i will pass.

I mean, i 've ripped off all Ashampoo's free offers to this day with just one account, at least we 're both (Ashampoo and me) honest to know that. :D

And since this is a promo hoping to attract people to pay for a product, i feel better with myself not pursuing this further, because the probability of actually buying it later was very low, exactly because of the online activation (also that automatic renew thing never sounded good to me). I don't want to think that i "cheated" in their offer on top of that.

I also think that they should have excluded from the... exclusion their paid customers (those like me who got a Mamuto GOATD once, ok, never paid) and allow them to take advantage of this offer with their current customer account, because i know that if i had paid for Mamutu for example and told me that i can't partecipate in this offer because i am "already" customer , but i can if i pretend that i am not, i would be pissed off.

I am off to install my brand new F-Secure free license. :D
