With NOD32 sliding down the various rankings I monitor, some incompatibility issues and my desire for change after a year of NODding I'm in the market for new anti-virus software that'll play well with the current version of Outpost Pro Firewall on a win7 (32 bit) machine.

But I cannot make head or tail of what's the best option out there. For every wonderful test result and stellar review there seem to be just as many apparent downsides to the leading contenders, from speed to false positives to poor malware detection etc.

I'm thinking of going with Kaspersky, but I'm also curious if any of the free packages (Avria, AVG, Avast etc.) can hold a candle to the likes of Kaspersky or Norton, which seem to be the two to beat these days. The paid Avira also looks good.

Any advice or recommendations appreciated, both of software and the best testing sites to check out (I've been using av-comparatives and shadowserver as my main sources of info).

best idea to find out which suits you and you pc best is to trial a few, most offer a month for you to test if they suit your needs:-what's best for 1 user isn't always best for another, too many variables

    I second this.

pipspeak you already seem well informed so it's really your call. Personally I moved from NOD32 to Avira premium about 18 months ago and haven't regretted it. It throws the occasional FP which I check separately

If I were you I'd check AV Comparatives, and start testing the ones that might look impressive to your judgment. Even though AV Comparatives is one the best around in terms of objectivity, their criteria of defining "advanced and advanced +, is arguable and therefore your own expectations about an AV are an important factor.

Also may be a good idea to check the web and other forums for conflicts. Outpost has a HIPS and AntiSpyware components so there could be possible conflicts with other programs. Eliminating the programs with conflicts could narrow your list somewhat.

Considering there are not supposed to be A v B threads, that's about all I can tell you besides, as others have mentioned- check the threads and just download/trial a few programs to see which you like the best and run the smoothest on your computer.

Kaspersky slides, Avira slides, they all slide. Just depends on what testing site you are looking at. Question is, did your current fail you because if it didnt, why bail. I honestly think Eset has their backs pinned against the wall and know they have got to work and work hard to get back to where they were.I feel they can do this, actually have to do this and that the best is yet to come.

    Isnt this a A vs B thread?

Why don't you give eScan a try?

    Its detection rate is 98%(Advanced+).

Its malware removal rate is nearly perfect(Advanced+).

In the Aug 09 on-demand comparative, it just had 4 false positives.

And above all that, it's the cheapest.

seems every thread on here can be turned into an A vs B type if the posters try hard enough!(and some do try!!)

it wasn't intended as an A vs B thread... I was simply seeing if there were any new favorites out there among those in the know and it appears that no one piece of software has risen to the top. That's how I found ESET years ago -- many people on boards like this were raving about it, making it an obvious choice.

The main issue with ESET is that it is not quite compatible with Outpost, which has become my favorite firewall. I'll give a few others a go and see how they pan out.

My other question remains, however -- is there any appeciable difference between the detection capabilities of free and paid versions of AV software like Avira, AVG etc? From what I understand the free versions lack some bells and whistles, but the AV engine is identical to the paid version. Is that correct?

In my own case I first find what works well on my system. I select trials of the ones with a high detection rate. It has not been difficult to find high detection rates and smooth running on my system.

I would not leave NOD unless it did not run well for me. But I understand the desire to test something else.
    The free ones are excellent.

    Regards,
    Jerry

OK, scrap this thread :) Thanks everyone for comments and suggestions.

I'll start a new thread when I decide upon a specific AV product.
