Latest version has an unmask checkbox.

I would not use the original file extension, because you won't know anymore what file is encrypted or not, and notepad would try to open the .txt file and would show just garbage...

    Start button? For?

For the encryption, I use AES and SHA1 (128 bit) as the hash.
Files you delete with the program, be it by moving them to the encryption/decryption drop zones or by dropping the mon the delete drop zone, will be secure erased following DoD.

The password is not stored anywhere on disk, so do not forget it! I cannot retrieve your data when you forgot the passwords you used!
The password is only stored in memory, AES encrypted.

keep the extension is for privacy , a file with a different extension could be understood like a encrypted file
and there is a search feature (and it looks the header) so easy to find the encrypt files

to start to encrpt, i could want to encrypt 600 files for example , a start button could be useful , like a pause , your program it's really very fast but with a lot of file could be necessary a lot of time

    i did not understand
does the program encrypt the file and delete the original file?

i'm not an expert , is strong enough ?

    thank you so much!

    I'm trying to understand this...

Are you saying file.doc gets changed to file.encrypted.doc (or maybe file.enc.doc) or something like that? Or actually doing something to the file beyond encryption?

For me, I would want to be able to look @ a file in Windows Explorer and know if it's encrypted or not. If I don't want that, then I would use a container type encryption program like softtouch's The Vault, Free OTFE or TrueCrypt. I think that having files that are encrypted and not encrypted that have identical names could/would lead to mass confusion.

The file "test.doc" would be encrypted (after compressing it) to "test.doc.qfe". The extension .qfe is added to the file name.

The original file will not be deleted, except you move it to the encrypt drop zone (by holding the shift key) or by moving the original file onto the delete drop zone.

I am not a friend of automatically deleting user files... not as long a program is still under development.

Also be aware that this little project is as stated on the website, under development, and the posted version is a prototype, so to speak. Consider it as a preview version which will be tailored based on user responses.

I think it's Kruptos 2 that you need.

Although I think the creation of virtual volumes by TrueCrypt would be the best solution.

That's a cool program, but I believe he wanted something with simple drag and drop, but I might be wrong.

Just uploaded another preview version, which has an additional drop zone to collect files and encrypt them later.

for the privacy , i want to encrypt mytest.doc
i would like to have 1 file encrypted with the name mytest.doc
or for example some photos , myphoto00x.jpg -> encrypted myphoto00x.jpg
if somebody try to open them , he/she will think they are garbage
but you with this great tool you can scan for header and find the files encrypted

If ever you have use for it, and have issues or want to discuss features, there is now a support forum installed on my website at freesoftwaretoolbox.com. Additionally, bugs can be reported to a bug tracker at ssdnet.biz. I am not sure its a good idea to discuss my development here at wilders...

No, just related to the software, bugs, issues, requests etc., not a discussion forum, just for support I will give for all my software. Its just installed.

I will add that option soon, but it need more testing first.
Its just too risky to enabled this feature.
Imagine, you use the preview version with sensitive and important files, and in the middle of encrypting them, you lost power, or the program crash. You would lost your important files and will come to me and will blame me.

I'm still not sure what the objection is to TrueCrypt. Once you enter the password and mount a volume you can easily drag & drop one or more files or folders into it or out of it. Once you dismount the volume it's inaccessible to everyone, and even the volume letter disappears.

However, I guess this wouldn't work for someone who wants to mix encrypted files with unencrypted ones throughout a disk, such that they would be side-by-side. Is that what you're trying to accomplish?

gpg4win secures files, plus you the ability to encrypt your emails as well.

Just right click on an individual file or folder, choose either sign and encrypt or encrypt and a click encrypts it. It's a free program and works great on both xp and Vista. I have it on my xp desktop and Vista laptop. It's securing my tax and business info.

    http://www.gpg4win.org/

It stresses email but is a great and easy encryption program for files, folders and about anything else you want to keep prying eyes away from. I use the email feature regularly just to annoy any nosey Govt people, should they be flagging such e-mails.

No, you have to create a volume first, but it's pretty easy to do, especially if you just create a "container file" (a large encrypted file that becomes a virtual drive when you mount it). The tutorial walks you through it.

I didn't see it mentioned here but 7zip does AES-256.

What exactly are you hashing? Plaintext? Ciphertext? Is it a MAC (e.g., HMAC)? Also, what happens to metadata (e.g., header)? Ideally, it would need confidentiality and integrity too; otherwise, it's going to leak information. You could use the AES and SHA-1 in an encrypt-then-authenticate composition, which, if done properly, will give you the strongest notions of confidentiality and integrity; if you're already using the primitives, there's no reason not to get the most out of them. Besides, you might not be getting the security you think you're getting, out of the current configuration.

Didn't mean to put a damper on the conversation. Just curious as to how you're using the cryptographic primitives. :)

Mantra, when using Axcryprt, if you have all of your files in oone folder, you just right click on that folder and it encrypt all of the files in that folder. I just tried it. And of course if you zip the folder, it encrypts the zip file. But anyway, it will encrypt many files at once if you right click on a folder.
