I am running Windows 98. I have already downloaded Adaware and Spybot, and run them frequently. I have AVG virus protection; it has "healed" the virus about 5 times....however, my computer is a mess. Pop ups, slow speed, browsing for all kinds of files on start up, etc.....all the symtpoms you read about in all the forums.
I am at a loss. I read that if i post my "hijack this" log someone can help. Here it is:

    Hi tammylee,

You have a version of Adtomi on your system.
Follow the instructions below to fix it.

Download the appropiate file below (Adtomi Cleanup.zip):
For 98 or ME or For XP.
It was created by Mosaic1 and is available here with her kind permission.

Then if you have a Script Blocking Program enabled, disable it first so the scripts may run.

Unzip the file downloaded above to C:\Windows.

See if there is an Adtomi or yahoo stocks icon in your system tray, it might be red ?? and if so right click and select remove (you must be online for this part).
A web page from Adtomi would appear "-uninstall was succesful!".
Then go off line. (Note that all infections may not have this icon, so if it isn't there then don't worry.)

Next press CTRL >> ALT >> DEL once to bring up task manager and stop the running process on the funny named file with 8 assorted, random letters & numbers.
There also might be morze1 running, if so end that process as well.
If you don't have any starnge named exe files running or you can't stop it running, then DO NOT CONTINUE, please ask for more help first.

Now locate and double click Cleanup.bat that is in the folder you unzipped (C:\Windows\Adtomi Cleanup).
***Do not touch the VBS files. The bat file will run the scripts.
It will remove the Adtomi spyware files from the windows folder, clean the startup folders, create backups of the Adtomi exe files it deletes and save them in this folder, create a list of all oddly named files deleted from the windows folder, uninstall the BHO, and start HijackThis and give you directions on what to remove.

When you have finished please restart the computer.

Run HijackThis again and post the contents of your new log and the contents of Adtomi.txt in your next reply in your Forum Topic.

    Regards,
    Kent

Thanks Kent. I followed your directions. I ctrl/alt/del all the oddly named files, and ran the cleanup bat from the Adtomi Cleanup folder. I removed the 04 entries I was prompted to (ones with 8 letter long filenames and the ones ending with /dk.

I restarted....upon reboot the AVG program came up with the big red virus warning that said the following:(i'm being specific and pardon the length of post but despartely wanting to get this fixed.) I had "healed" the virus on the previous reboot, but it came right back this reboot. It says:

AVG Boot Up Scanner has detected a virus. C:Do.exe Trojan horse downloader.revop.a. We recommend that you restart your computer using an operating system from a virus free system diskette or cd-rom, then use the AVG Rescue disk and remove any virus by healing. Then I was given the option to R reboot and restart system from virus free diskette or C continue at my own risk.

I continued at my own risk as I am not knowledgeable about how to restart using an operating system (which I interpret as reformatting my computer and losing all my files and don't want to have to do).......and I have "healed" this virus at least 5 to 6 times in the last week and am hoping your advice enables me to get this fixed without a reformat. I have a business online and reformatting would be my LAST option.

After continuing at my own risk, I ran HijackThis and here is my new log. I have also ran Adaware, SpyBot, and CW Shredder regularly the last week. Here is the new log:

    Hi tammylee,

    Welcome to Wilders.

Before you start, please unzip or move HijackThis to a separate folder of its own. The program will make backups to the folder it's in. These easily get lost in a temporary folder or a folder with other programs.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\windows\system32\blank.htm
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {000020DD-C72E-4113-AF77-DD56626C6C42} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: IE Agent - {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000221} - C:\PROGRA~1\LYCOS\IEAGENT\CSIE.DLL
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0019C3E2-DD48-4A6D-ABCD-8D32436323D9} - C:\WINDOWS\BXXS5.DLL

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [bxxs5] RunDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\BXXS5.DLL,DllRun

There also may be hidden files. See HERE for how to show hidden files.

Then reboot into safe mode and delete:

    c:\windows\system32\blank.htm
    C:\PROGRA~1\LYCOS\ <-- entire folder
    C:\WINDOWS\BXXS5.DLL

Reboot and then post a fresh HijackThis log.

    Regards,
    Kent

Edited to remove system restore instructions......

Kent, when I right-click my computers and go to properties, I don't have a System Restore option......is this going to be a problem? Should I go ahead and do the other things you have recommended?

    Tammy,

Just disregard the system restore part. Sorry, that was my mistake as I did not notice you were on Win 98.....

Kent, I went to safe mode and did as you requested. However, I cannot find the c:\windows\system32\blank.htm nor cannot the c:\windows\bxxs5.dll anywhere in my system.

I did check my system; I have "show all files" checked, so I don't believe they are hidden.

I rebooted (no funny 8 digit exe files to cancel out ...thank goodness)......no virus detected....(thank goodness)........

However, the computer is still slow and glitchy...and i have a cable modem....should not be slow....

Here is the hijacklog after rebooting from safe mode and being able to delete c/progra~/lycos folder.

I will mention that while searching in the Windows folder for the ones you asked me to delete.....I saw a LOT of those weird 8 digit exe files there.......

Thanks again for your help......it is invaluable and much appreciated.

    Hi Tammy,

Your log is clean. So far, so good.

You should visit the Windows Update site. This will replace many system files and will probably solve your slowdown problem at the same time.
Plus you will get a lot of security patches.

    Regards,

    Pieter
