I just wanted to post that after several previous attempts to download updates which were all unsuccessful, I was finally able to download updated signatures for Avira Personal about 15 minutes ago.
The download was very fast and trouble-free and the signatures show a date of 11-01-2009.

Avira itself was downloaded from www.filehippo.com

I hope this signals the end of the updating problem.

If ever the servers get overloaded again, you can download the updates from here.

    Cheers.

    Well...

the update problem has returned. o_O
Since late last night, six attempts and cannot even connect to the update servers.

    arjunned;

    Thanks for the link.
    Unfortunately, it doesn't work either.

I'll revisit Avira at a later date. This is totally ridiculous and unnecessary.

    Avast 5, here I come !

Last night I got lucky I guess and was able to finally update after about 3 days of not being able to. Today I tried updating, but it wouldn't connect again. It is getting very annoying. I don't care how good of an anti-virus Avira is if they keep having problems with their update servers then its just not worth using anymore. I cant wait for Avast 5 to come out either.

I wouldn't say that. The free version of Avira seems to affect everyone.

The MSE update issue seems to be rare, primarily affecting computers waking on from hibernation under certain timing circumstances.

Of course, if I had the MSE update issue on any of my computers, I'd be screaming too. And I am now using MSE on all my computers.

This signature update problem has happened before with Avira Personal (free).
Summer of 2007; updates were spotty at best and usually non-existent for about a month.

During that time I downloaded a trial of Avira Premium and updates were never a problem.
During that time, Avira did state that they were having ongoing problems with their older update servers which were dedicated to the free edition.

I can't believe they would discontinue the free edition; not when their traditional rivals are releasing new versions and several new and viable players have emerged with free applications that show promise.
With their own new antivirus on the horizon, now would not be the time to alienate potential customers.

Hopefully, this will all blow over and be a distant bad memory- just like the Summer of 2007.

lol its rediculous how ignorant people are, RIGHT on their own description it says the free version doesnt get their premium update servers, they TELL u the update servers arent as good as their paid ones.

if u dont like it dont use it, its not that they cant HANDLE it, they do it for incentive to buy the paid version which is after all what any free version/trial of a product is for.

You can discontinue it yourself like I did years ago. Yes, there are some acceptable alternatives :)

For about two weeks I haven't gotten anymore problems with updating (since the time I installed Avira again). As far as I remember, after the installation the first update download speed was over 1 MB/s. :argh: And today the updater still performs very well, immediately connects and downloads files (if any) with high speeds.

I am personally saddened that several posters are trying to get people to stop using Avira, apparently so that they will get better service. At the present time Avira makes the free version available. I do not personally feel that There is any corporate decision to drop the Free version. There apparently are some problems in updating the Free version so I will do it manually. This is not how it should be but a manual update works as well automatic updates. In a recent review PC World magazine advised free antivirus users not to ask for help in this forum, perhaps for reasons reflected by the past few posts. When reported this concept was immediately refuted by the people who run this forum. The preceeding makes me wonder if the reviewer did not have a point after all.

Guys, it's useless to complain, this is a returning issue with Avira Free... I remember back in v6 (?) where you had to download a big signature file each time, there was a period that you had to wait minutes changing one server after the other, to have a chance to update.

Some folks were giving tips "Update after midnight or early morning (german local time)" and stuff like this.

From time to time, the same story returns. Now the updates are smaller but the userbase is more.

If you can't live with it, then change product... Because apparently this servers issue isn't something exceptional. From time to time it is repeated over the years.

I 've done the same since the time of the big update problems a few years ago...

Exactly. You are warned you won't be getting the "good" servers. So if they aren't good enough for you, either learn to live with it, or live without it.

To those who say just get pay version. On my loaned out PC for some senior folks on a tight budget, (not listed in my sig.), I too am getting error messages on the download reports.

Based on my years of experience in using Avira I believe Fuzzfas has got it right.

Download updates at a low volume time or move on. One could reinstall but there is no guarantee things will be better. That just insures your updater is not hung or broke.

Edit: After several hours it did update. Just leave the updater going and check back you will eventually get it. The cost of free protection as was said.;)

avira is having update issues for quite some time now. complaining is useless.
why anyone is taking this crap from avira when there are good alternatives, is beyond me...

I moved on and installed A-Squared Free.

Lifes too short to sit around getting angry about Avira. This conclusion I came to after nearly putting my monitor through the wall :D

There are apparently 100 million free users of Avira. They all hate their free meal update, but they can't get themselves to change to another company or buy the premium version. They are still complaining. I can't imagine a company like Symantec feeding 100 million users free, without a problem, can you?
