dont know if it has been reported but Avast Pro 5 and the Suite will have a sandbox that will work with both 32 and 64 bit.

For more information see the topic: uTorrent in P2P Shield on Avast's official forum.

I just reinstalled Avast5, updated it, and rebooted. Right off the reboot, I am at 135,000,000 read/10,000,00 write io. Working set is 34meg. Not sure how you guys have such little cpu & ram usage.

I did a test of AVG for a 30min, and now Avast 5 for 30min. It's on the same PC, as I uninstalled AVG9 for now. I am recording ram, cpu time, and read/write io. I know 30min isnt enough for an accurate test, but I just want to see how close(or far) they are from each other in terms of lightness.

My system runs pretty light, with only 21 processes and services running on idle, so I guess avast doesn't have a whole lot of stuff to scan.

Try rebooting again and check the disk usage, because your persistent cache would've been completely empty on the first reboot and it would've added some of the files used on startup to the cache.

I'd like to know how effective the persistent cache is. ;)

Here are my very unscientific results for AVG9 and Avast 5 (30min each).

    AVG9
    11 meg working set
    46,000 CPU time
    303,000,000 read / 28,000,000 write

    Avast5
    30 meg working set
    22,000 CPU time
    309,000,000 read / 26,000,000 write

These results are after 30min. During the AVG9 period, a prevx scan kicked off, so I did one manually while testing Avast. Other than that, the time was mostly web surfing. Seem like AVG is lighter with Ram, while Avast is lighter with CPU time. the read/write bytes are almost identical.

I think I am going to uninstall Comodo firewall (i dont use the AV or D+), and see if it has any impact on my Avast ram usage.

Ok, I rebooted and Avast Read IO was 81,000,000 right of the bat. Lower than last time, but not much better. I am going to uninstall Comodo FW now.

    Thanks ;)
    That's still what.. 40% better?

Just for comparison, my read/write was 17,950,000/3,550,000 after rebooting.

Maybe I have too many other things running. I also have Comodo FW, Threatfire, Prevx. Hopefully once the behavior blocker in Avast is functional, I can nix Threatfire.

I figured I would check task manager for the heck of it (I've been using process explorer).

Task mgr shows only about 6 meg! So I went into the "select columns", and added some others. The 6 meg is "Memory(private working set)". "Working set", is the same as what I have been using in process explorer, and is much higher (28.5meg). So again, it boils down to which is the better stat to use.

Anyway, this may explain the vast differences we are seeing in our RAM usage numbers.

Here is a good link that explains the difference:

Avast & Mamutu were not as light as AVG & Mamutu - my laptop has only 1 GB RAM :doubt: On the other machine (3 GB RAM) I don't feel any difference :)

Deleting files after a right click scan is ultra slow and the GUI freezes. The popup notification is somewhat ugly and sometimes doesnt disappear (stays at top right corner). Also i am seeing .tmp files left if something is detected.

Other then that its very light on cpu, in fact it seems to be lightest AV i ever tried so far (sorry nod2.7 :)). Lets hope their Behavior Blocker doesnt start to slow things down, but im confident.
But how can such a good product be free? Unbelievable...

avast! is checking for new signatures whenever you connect your system to internet (either dialup or when PC starts) and then every 4 hours.
However signatures are usually released daily and when there are special outbreaks, several times a day.

I know it'll be ready when it's ready, but is there a projected release date (month) for v5.0? :)

You can also change the update frequency in Settings > Updates > Details.
    ;)

Within a couple of weeks, I'm guessing.
They still need to implement the Behaviour Shield so it'll probably be another beta version for that, then another beta version for fixing any bugs with the Behaviour Shield, then it'll probably be released.

Honestly who knows... They have not even enabled all the options yet, and when they do they could run into a whole nother slue of bugs.

the only thing not implemented is the behavior shield. And that should be soon. Avast is very careful to not even give it to beta until they are confident it wont release a slew of issues. I commend them on how this whole beta has progressed. VLK and the team have been very responsive in their support forums to all issues. I agree with their Vincent Steckler that this free product would kick the pants off many paid versions.

I'm personally waiting for the paid version of v5, At that time I'm moving some of my computers from the paid version of AV's they currently have to this as I have found those AV's "wanting".

the paid and the suite are going to be the icing on the cake. Sandbox, antispam which they are personally going to prove most dont work, and a firewall that will be as simple but effective to use as Nortons. but better;)

its no longer going to be implemented. according to them they wuld need to quadruple theyre infrastructure to support pulse updates for the new version.
