From their free av web page.

I have a free version and in the extended threats category, adware/spyware is listed.

I think that Avira free update problem is only a server problem, as many people said here in the previous posts: Avira is a Germany Company, Germans may have many flaws, but they don't use these tricks to sell. So my position is:

    - Avira is probably the best av available, no match.
    - I use a multi layer security system
    - I can download from Avira's site the file for the manual update when the automatic update has some problems.
    - the result is: I go on to use Avira free. :) :D

People complaining about free software. Unbelievable. Avira is an excellent product. Have been using Avira Antivir Premium for two years. Never a problem with update servers. Very reliable and fast. Excellent protection by the way too.

If you like the product then why don't you purchase the product and support the company. Otherwise shut up and quit your freaking complaining and deal with the free version server issues or move on to another free AV. You are wasting our time on this forum.

ok why you nervous ? do you work for them or what ?
we have the right to complain on any product free or not free.
any antivirus should update and this is not discussable thing. no one is forcing avira to give a free product , but if they decided to give a free version then they must do it the right way.

Very likely Avira had no idea when they offered this freebee that people would use it to the tune of millions of users. That being the case I can easily see why they have no great desire to solve the Server issue. Many of the these users will never purchase and more than a few will just use the free version forever. The problem is if Avira does not update & someones security is compromised Aviras reputation is affected and more than likely whoever fixes such a compromised system will blame Avira for poor updating. Even more importantly I would not use the Pro Version either. If the free version does not work than why would the Pay version. The impression I am getting from the last few posts is that Free users are out of line if they expect that the Antivirus they installed actually protects their system.

no one said that antivirus gives 100% protection
you can say the protection is divided to:
    60% depend on antivirus
20% depend on firewalls, HIPS and sandbox softwares
    20% depend user intelligence

I would divide the great percentile to user intelligence (common sense).

you have no right to complain about a FREE product. It is done so in hopes by the manufacturer that your decide you like it & buy a full featured version. If you don't like the way the free version updates you have a couple choices...you can buy the full featured version or move along to another version... Remember you get what you pay for fussing about something given to you free is well being ungrateful...next subject...

what do you think is more protected pc ?
1- pc of a beginner user with antivirus and firewall installed
2- pc of an experienced user with no protection software installed

I used Avira free for a year back in 2007 when my computer was exposed to real threats from plugging in infected USB flash drives. Sometimes there were slow updates, but in the end it would eventually update.

I finally bought one premium license out of respect for this company that has become one of the best in a very competitive field, it has kept for years an excellent detection rate among single engine AVs (so far).

I'd like to tell a short story about my father's in law computer. I cleaned it thoroughly and installed Avira free. Last week (6 months later) he complained that his computer was blue screening soon after starting it, and I thought bad news as he lost his installation CD.

I managed to boot in safe mode, and run Avira from there. It stopped scanning at 35% (no idea why) but managed to clean 8 different types of malware. Rebooted, no more blue screens, updated (it did it quickly) Avira and run a default scan: this time it completed the scan and found 18 more undesirable objects.

The computer is working normally now and when I asked him how come his computer was so infected having Avira, he said that whenever there was a detection he would just choose 'ignore' as he didn't think that it was really important (he only uses his computer to check his mail and very safe web surfing habits, although he uses many USB flash drives which I think were the main problem). I scanned the computer with Prevx for a second opinion, and it found 3 more objects which turned out to be FPs (no criticism to Prevx as the detections were related to Korean programs).

The bottom line is that Avira free is as effective as the paid one, but when Leo 2005 mentions 100 million free users, I'm not surprised if there are times when updating might be problematic (at times it might be similar to a benign DoS attack to the Avira's servers!). If someone is impatient with this inconsistent updating service just buy the Premium or choose another company.

I am sorry, but I feel you are wrong.
Over and above, the fact a person has the RIGHT to complain about any and
every thing they damn well want to,from weather, food prices to hair loss,
I cant understand why the users of a free anti-virus should not have a right
to expect it to function properly, and complain if it does not.

You,on the other hand have the right to dismiss these complaints as invalid, ungrateful, etc.

I never in a million years thought I would say something like this, but if being FREE does not absolve Comodo from criticism here, why should
there be a different standard for Avira?

you have a right to complain but I don't understand why you would want to.
Avira owes you nothing, you paid ziltch for it?, It's like I would buy you a free lunch & than you complain about the amout of meat on it, I'd think I wasted my time. Paid customers come 1st, free gets what left , updates are slow...my 2 cents tough...you want top service buy one than I'll be there with you fussing when updates don't come because you 'paid' for something you didn't get...perhaps you don't understand the difference between free & paid...or are you one that feels that companies should give away services?
