In theory yes assuming there's no problems with that software.

But with definitions of over 44MB this may not be the best choice for users on slow connections.

The reg hack works for me and hopefully the new beta being tested will solve this updating problem.

Blackcat, you do have a point and it's the reason why I stated "those who may want" in my FYI.

Inversely, there are those who can not grasp the concept of, do not know how, or are afraid to tweak the Registry. A slow download could be the lesser of many evils.

I join you in the hope that the Beta cures the updating issue.

After reading the many posts here and 2 weeks of problem-free running the first version (and many more version updates & improvement to come) on 2 computers, I migrated a 3rd laptop to MSE 2 days ago*puppy*

Whoopie ! Microsoft MSE....way to go !:thumb:

I am starting to put MSE on many clients computer if i find AVG 9 just doesn't work correctly on them.

I like the way it works on vista and windows 7

I do not like the way it works on older computers running xp (either version) but newer ones (less than 2yrs old) it works just fine

Microsoft sent an email to the beta testers about the latest beta that is available. You can get it from Microsoft Connect.

I had to go to something else till they fix this. Mine wouldn't update at all after coming out of sleep mode. If I rebooted, and it was over 24 hours old (the defs), then it would update after about 10 minutes after reboot. But never after coming out of sleep. That's a deal killer for me at the moment.

Here's a simple workaround - especially if you have "WinPatrol" installed, which does not require a registry tweak:

    *************************

    ( all for XP SP3 )

    (1) go to:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Essentials

    (2) Open Notepad

    (3) Copy and paste the following into NotePad:

    @echo off
    cd C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Essentials
    start /min MpCmdRun.exe -SignatureUpdate

    (4) save as:

    MSE.bat

    (5) Right click on MSE.bat and "Create Shortcut"

    (6) Move the shortcut to:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

    (7) Open WinPatrol

(8 ) Go to "Startup Programs Tab"

    (9) Highlight MSE.bat

(10 ) Left click on:"Move to Delayed Start Program List"

    (11) Go to "Delayed Start Tab"

    (12) Highlight MSE.bat

    (13) Click on "Delay Options"

    (14) set for 1 to 2 minutes, and "Open Minimized"

    **************************

This will force a manual signature update just after every bootup or change of logon.

The delay will avoid a problem I've had with tray icons getting lost during boot up if I use Task Scheduler to call MSE.bat at bootup or logon, and gives MSE enough time to finish it's routine bootup work before going for an update. My experience is you'll need at least a minutes delay.

You'll see the command prompt "flash" and drop to the tray, and stay in the tray until the update is done.

Works great, and combined with a 3 or 4 hour "Interval" reg tweak is even better.

Fix it MSFT, if you're reading this - I'm out of tweaks !

( You could call MSE.bat via Task Scheduler periodically during the day if you fear the registry reaper - say every 3 or 4 hours - works well that way too , but I like a fresh update on bootup every day)

Yesterday,I used MSE to have a full scan.It detected several viruses and had prompts.I clicked the button "clear my computer",then my computer didn't react.Maybe my computer was too old to run MSE.

That's a good idea. I'm using a freeware from splinterware called system scheduler and have it check for updates every 2 hours. It also has the option to hide the update. It works great on Vista Home and Xp Pro pcs.

    Hey Ice,

You said the other day that you were going to try the beta and see if the sleep mode/update problem has been corrected and report back to us. How is that going so far?

No updates. I think the beta might have resolved some other issues the AV had but I didn't experience. The only problem I have with it is the updating. You should have a look at the freeware system scheduler by splinterware. Just put the update command line in and have it check whenever you like, with no DOS window. Works great and I'm always updated. Until they resolve this, I will use this utility with it. If I didn't like this AV so much I would have ditched it by now but it is really good. (except for the updating)

Im getting very high cpu spikes with msmpeng.exe. It will spike for 10-15 seconds in excess of 50% then drop to 0% for several minutes then it will spike again etc. How can I narrow it down on why it is spiking to rectify the problem?

Same for me when in XP. I never could track it down even though I excluded nearly every file and folder. No MSE for me in XP. In Win 7, I get the high CPU after startup, then it settles down.
