minacross, looks like something is corrupted. Don't know if you are trying to install the Free or Paid versions, but if it is the Free version, make sure you download the full program from the AVG Free Installation Files page and try installing again.

bloomcounty, you posted in the correct thread so no worries. I'll try to answer your questions:
If AVG follows the past pattern of behavior, the 8.5 definitions should continue until you see an announcement in their Forum.

The jury is still out on this one. However, your 6.1.744.001 is just a plain firewall, like my 5.5.094.000, so there are no issues. Reading their forum and in particular this Firewall Compatibility thread, it looks like future ZA detection will no longer be the case. We'll have to wait and see.

If you uninstall 8.5 first, you will lose all your settings. Installing 9.0 over 8.5 should delete the old version, the same as what I experienced.

Only if you do a Custom installation would you be able to keep the new AVG the same as the old AVG, feature wise.

bloomcounty, my advice is to wait awhile and keep reading their forum postings. IMO, this new AVG 9.0 is not a radical departure from 8.5 (like 7.5 was to 8.0) although the low CPU usage is a welcoming sight. With every new version, there are unforeseen problems and a wait of a month or so does not hurt anyone, as long as the virus definitions are updated on a daily basis on the old 8.5.

Thanks, JRViejo! I plan to wait until they actually stop providing definition updates to 8.5 Free before updating. I did a custom install of 8.5, so it sounds like I can do it the same way for 9.0. I may just write down my settings and uninstall with add/remove programs and do a clean install, just to be safe -- but I'll check back on that point when the time comes. Thanks, again! :thumb:

I just install this version to test it and for unknown reasons it doesn't update. It can't download the updates. Seems all the free AVs have problems with the free users -_-

tekkaman, looking at your recent post history, it seems that you were using Rising Free Anti Virus 2009, and if you did not completely removed that program, prior to installing AVG, remnants of Rising could be preventing the AVG updates.

If you have given up on using AVG, you could end up with a bigger problem now, if you try to install another AV program, without completely removing AVG.

See AVG 9.x Uninstall / Re-Install Instructions for proper AVG removal procedures, using the AVG uninstall/cleanup utilty.

can i ask if it has any ads, and where they appear, how intrusive are they? like do they popup on your screen when your browsing and you least expect it, or are they just below the gui like they always were before.

that doesn't really answer my question, i used it before 8.0, so saying its the same as the previous version means nothing because i didnt have it.

It's not bad, and I have found it easily tolerable. Much better than the pop-up in AntiVir.

I didn't install it on my main computer. My dad got a new laptop. I installed it there. It can't connect to the update server. It doesn't have any third party firewall other than windows firewall.

tekkaman, regularly, new PCs come with trial AVs (McAfee, Norton, etc.) already installed and if that particular AV is not completely removed, it can cause problems with other AVs.

In any case, it sounds like AVG does not work. That's why I gave you the link to their forum's post that has uninstall instructions and a link to the AVG uninstall utility.

FYI. Looks like AVG corrected the date discrepancy problem and today, both the Installation Files and Documentation pages show the correct issue dates. As of the time of this post:

    AVG Free 9.0 for Windows (avg_free_stf_en_90_698a1730.exe) - version 9.0.698 - Issue date: October 22, 2009

User Manual AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (English) - version 9.0.4 - Issue date: October 7, 2009

FYI. Today, the Documentation page shows User Manual 9.0.5, dated November 3, 2009.

The previously missing Email Scanner sub-sections (as detailed in my Post #37) are now included:

Logs and Results - Page 90.
    Servers - Pages 91 through 94.

My new version 9.0.704 came, via Normal Update, today as well.

    AVG90704A.gif

The GUI has changed, adding an advert:

    AVG90704B.gif

And when you click on the Get complete Internet Security button, you'll see this:

    Capture11-9-2009-9.23.37 AM.gif

The only caveat with this new version, after rebooting, Windows Defender had been disabled. Enabled WD and both are running fine.

I did experience the WD disabling with the older version, and only time will tell if this action will be a daily occurrence, as detailed in this Wilders thread: AVG/Windows Defender Conflict, posted by JohnBurns who is using the AVG Paid 9.0 version.

Does this new advert replace the one on the bottom of the screen?

This also applies to the German version ... AVG Internet Security is nice but too expensive compared to the competition :doubt:

    Sputnik, very good question! :D

After installation, I took a look at the 4 files that I had renamed into bak files and did not see new versions of them. Now that you asked the question, I just removed those 4 bak files and there is no more Notification window at the bottom of the GUI. :thumb:

:D Questioning makes smart they told me once... However very good to hear, personally I prefer this 'in GUI' advert more. Especially netbook users will be pleased I think.
Another question, may I ask why you decide to pair AVG Free up with Windows Defender and not with behavior based detection like ThreatFire? Since AVG has quite solid signature protection this behavior based detection is the only thing that's really missing.
