What do you think is the lighter firewall for xp?

The only feature i need in my firewall is to block applications from connecting to the internet without my consent.

The incoming traffic is dealt by hardware firewall.

Something similar to Sphinx Windows 7 firewall control is what i have in mind, but it must be for windows XP.

I know this is kind of impossible because Sphinx firewall uses Windows 7 internal firewall as engine, but i'd like something similar, that does not do anything else, just ask me when an application wants to connect to internet whether i want it or not, and if it needs to remember my answers for the subsequent connections from this application.

Most firewalls have useless features that i dont need and even worse mess up with network traffic, slow down the computer and whatnot.

 

lightest and most simple 3rd party firewall ive EVER used is look n stop.

 

Comodo has a lot of stuff you may not need, but you don't need to use it, and it is easily the lightest 3rd party firewall I have found. Just run it without the AV and D+ if you don't want the stuff.

You might just be better off buying a cheap router though, as that doesn't use any ram/cpu.

 

Yeah comodo is good, i run it on my win7 machine, but i was thinking about something a little more simple for the xp machine.

Router not gonna help: if an application wants to call home on port 80 how im going to block it from the router?

 

The lightest firewalls I know of, are look 'n' stop and privatefirewall.

 

Private Firewall runs light here. Less than 28,000 k in 2 processes.

For me it doesn't matter what I have enabled, it runs about 6-12 meg.

 

hmm interesting, unless ur runing 256mb of RAM, this honestly doesnt matter wen it comes to performance.

 

I have found Online Armor to be very light as well but Look N Stop is pretty unbeatable...

 

look n stop is as close as u will get in today's market to a "pure" firewall.

Comodo firewall is very light,whether with or without D+, in my pc with D+ enabled it runs
cfp.exe at 3.556
cmdagent.exe at 6.792 ,
I think it is hard to find anything better with that kind of protection.

A point which makes me prefer it over OnlineArmor,apart from my preference for Comodo's looks, is that it protects ARP cache spoofing,and particularly Gratuitous ARP cache.
It means if you run more than one computer in a network you're better protected.

I couldnt find such a feature in OnlineArmor when i tried it,but didnt try the newest 3.5 version.

I ran all the greatest firewalls in the past excepting ZoneAlarm:
Kerio2.5 for a long time,then its development Sunbelt Kerio, Sygate Free and Pro, Jetico Free for a long time and tried out many I wont mention, but never found the right combination
strong protection+ ease of use
that Comodo can guarantee.
In spite of their many active detractors.

Once in a while,just to try out something new , i look around or download a new prog, but -also because not many are 64bits enabled- I always have to stick to Comodo.
Not that I regret it,though....

 

If your an experienced user, another light firewall would probably be GhostWall

I didn't know Agnitum had a free version. Is that fairly new?

 

It's been around for quite a few years.
This last version was much better than the older versions when I checked it out a month ago.

 

Just found a free of the Rising PF but it's 2008 version that was said to be the lightness for ARP, PHISH an etc.. Comodo I have that on everything here from server an etc.. Its not running as I would hope, keeps on prompting me to allow and disallow, like it can't remember the trust factor. Kinda weird. One system that records TV seems to be dragging and at times at can't get back into Windows it has to be Comodo causing it. Another one Firefox won't open and if it does it crashes. I also notice if I send a reply in forums it times out or can't connect. This is just the firewall only just acting strangely. I wish it didn't.

 

Regarding Agnitum, Windows 7 is not supported. At least not the the free version of the firewall.

Comodo works fine on Windows7.

It says "Windows 7". What don't you understand? Check the download drop down on their website. Both Windows 7 32bit and 64 bit supported.

 

I don't remember the timing of Win7 RTM, but maybe they had to wait for it until they could claim to "officially" support Win7, as everything before that was just a beta version of Win7. I don't know.

I just know that I have used it on multiple Win7 machines, without issues, for a couple months now.

 

The wife laptop is experiencing the same effect. All the system run what you see below. Only when run Comodo get this. I installed copy of Armor2net yes it old but it's very light but blocked that LTest 100% never let it through. CLTest it only missed 2 out of the 340 = 338/340
