I looked at the startup screen and avira says definitions updated on 8/23/2009 but definitions are still at 8/21 for me also.

    Same here.
I also can't update Avira Free the last days(or weeks). That is especially at day.
But at night(GMT + ) the update process goes like crazy.
Although i have never had update problems with Premium version.

Just checked, and it appears that 8/21 really is the last definitions update.

Today Avira is normal. It can update automatically but virus definitions are at 8/21.

I just look forward to seeing Avira will update normally tomorrow.

Not been updating for 2 days here. Sure it's free, but if you can't update then it's practically useless against zero day malware.

Never- ever had a problem with the paid version updating and I have used it for five years.

Have you tried updating manually ?

That's what I often do, to be sure I have the latest definitions.
Especially if I do research and will visit unknown webpages.
So I don't really rely on the automatic update process.

But in the past few days I've noticed the update being 'stuck' at scanning for new updates. I tried again a bit later, without any problems.

I use the Avira security suite, btw.

    Hi All

I really do not understand Aviras marketing strategy, on the one hand they have a fine product, "best of breed", on the other, one cannot do a simple task of updating definition files, program files consistently and regularly.

If they are in business to make money, do they seriously think that customers are going to buy an Antivirus product that does not update consistently.

The problem with Avira updates has been reported over a number of years, so I assume it is a marketing starategy. Lemmings springs to mind here. I recently downloaded the latest product version, 18 months after dumping it for poor updating. What do I find? Exactly the same reason again for dumping Avira. Arrogance or stupidity I know not which. But, this is not a SERIOUS COMPANY.

    Do NOT USE AVIRA

    Terry

ps I think it is a superb product. But to have to install it every few days to get the latest updates is ridiculous.

This is simple economics. People are beginning to realize that Avira is currently the single best anti-malware engine on the market (with an on access scan), and the software is free. The company can't currently meet the demand.

The issue is with their free version, not the paid version.

It worked. Not with you (so far) obviously but with many others which took their chance lately to grab the license discount (25 month for <20 EUR, 1 month from trial). - I can tell you: those lame or out of order update servers (for free version) helped me a lot spending the money because the additional webguard (premium version) alone hadn't done that. ;)

This isn't true and childish thinking!

How many million people are using their free version? Do you have any idea what bandwith is generated every day from those people and what this is in money (providing infrastructure etc.)?

Then maybe you should BUY it and enjoy fast (premium) update servers? :)

THIS is really ridiculous because you could simply load the virus definitions in one block from a fast server. No, I won't give you the link. Just read their forum and you will find it. - Or pay for a 'superb product'. This is what I did and I am happy now! :)
