Windows/ Microsoft updates failing

This problem started for me beginning of 2009. Microsoft updates randomly failing.
If I disable Antivirus and antispyware protection, updates do not fail.

This happens with my 170 PCs running Windows XP SP3, and servers running Windows 2003 and 2008 32/ 64-bits.

I search the Forum but couldn't find a post regarding this problem. I am sure I am not the only one with this problem.

Can you please tell me if this was discussed before and give me a link for the post or tell me how to avoid these failures?

When I complained about slow updates I was told its normal practice to be expected to manually disable the real-time file scanning, run windows update and then turn it back on.

I expect you will be told the same.

I checked your cfg and it seems you have changed some settings that interfere with the normal work - such as enabling AH on file execution , AH and RTP for on-access scan , scanning the network traffic of svchost.exe (which is responsible for Windows Updates) ... Additionally , you have changed some of the settings for the real-time file system protection (such as scanning operating memory , email files , etc) , which are generally disabled and invisible for the regular users as they are not present in the NOD32's GUI but visible only for an xml edition such as ESET Configuration editor .

I have disabled scanning the traffic for svchost.exe and have restored AH's settings to their default ones . I have also restored the above mentioned real-time protection settings to their default ones as they should be .

Edit it so that you only integrated your update settings (UN/PW) and push it to some machines to test . Hopefully , it works now .

Thank you for checking and tunning my config file. I changed UN+PW to the file you sent me, push it to one of my servers, and it did not work:
Succeeded: 4 updates
Failed: 5 updates
Error(s) found:
Code 80072F78 Windows Update encountered an unknown error

Previously I did what chrcol suggested: I disabled the real-time file scanning. After that I tried to update Windows and received the same error, 80072F78. Then I disabled Antivirus and antispyware protection and updates did not fail.

I attach again my config file because you wrote about several changes, I compared the file you tunned with my previous xml, and I only see a few changes.

Angelo, you are correct with right clicking the eset icon and selecting to temporarily disable antivirus and antispyware protection.The only thing I can personally think of right now would be to exclude globally these files:

KB ? ? ? ? ? ? which would be your windows update files.

I had to put spaces between the question marks to avoid the question smilies.

Other than that, there are no spaces between KB and the question marks.
